Liesel and Rudy continue their stealing this time targeting the mayor’s house and the endless supply of books. Rudy has problems with his Hitler Youth leader and has to join another group. Liesel brings snow to the basement, so Max can experience it and later that winter Max becomes severely ill. This causes the Nazi Party to inspect basements to see if they are suitable bomb shelters forcing the Hubermann’s to hide Max. Rudy participates in a Hitler Youth carnival and wins multiple running races. That fall, sirens go off and the Hubermanns rush to the safe basement on the block for the supposed air-raid because there basement was deemed not deep enough by the party members. Multiple more air-raids continue to occur and Liesel reads some of her books in the shelters to keep people calm. The residents of Molching also witness the marching of the Jews to the concentration camp, Dachau. This procession makes Hans help a stumbling Jew and get whipped for his actions. Due to this, Max is forced to leave the Hubermann house, so he will not get caught when the Nazi Party searches the Hubermann house. When men do come, they go next door to recruit Rudy for a special school, but his parents refuse. Hans finally gets his punishment and he is drafted in the war along with Rudy’s father because he refused to let Rudy go. Rudy becomes much angrier toward the Nazi Party and Hitler for doing this to his father. The Jewish parades continue and Rudy and Liesel attempt to feed the Jews bread without getting caught. Rosa eventually gives Liesel a final book that Max wrote for her called the Word Shaker. Later after this, the Hubermanns receive a letter that Hans is finally coming home
