    T. Coraghessan Boyle's short story, "Friendly Skies," is about a woman named Ellen who is trying to get to New York to visit her mom, but keeps getting delayed. The engine on her first plane catches on fire, and they are forced to turn around for an emergency landing. Once back at LAX, where she had started from, she is only able to get a non-direct flight that stops off in Chicago. While on this flight, Ellen keeps thinking of grim details of her past, and she takes prescription medicine with alcohol to try and numb her pain. Eventually, a man named Mr. Lercher goes crazy on the plane and threatens to kill everyone. With her built up frustration, Ellen picks up a fork and stabs the man repeatedly, which helps in restraining him long enough to land in Denver. Boyle shows that repressing one's feelings might cause them to build up, resulting in an irrational outburst of emotion.…

From the moment Piper reports to the federal prison for her 15-month sentence, she realizes that this is going to be an entire new journey. Those are the actions that Piper is not able to do because she is not in the control of her own power anymore. The mood that is set is that Piper is not taking this bad. She realizes that the actions she made she now has to own up to and face the consequences. Throughout this piece I saw the different outlook people have on the rough situations they can be put…

Night Flying Woman was such a great book. I felt as though the author, Ignatia Broker, really wanted all of her readers to know the ways of her people and how different they were from the American way of life. It is clear that the Ojibway way of life changed greatly after the Americans pushed them form their land. The Ojibway became modernized, or as I like to think, “English-ized”. The people of the Ojibway were always afraid that the younger generations would forget their ways, and as soon as the white people came in, that is what started to happen. The Ojibway were forced to go to school, read, write, and live the English way. Their culture was stripped from them by the American people.…
