A few miles away, a boy is growing up in Rosedale, a wealthy neighbourhood, which thrives on the motto “If you can dream it, you can achieve it.” His situation may not be perfect, but he is told that he can accomplish anything, regardless of any obstacles that befall him. Each individual has vastly different ideas of what opportunity is. This is reality.…
"And that opportunity played a critical role in their success" (30 Gladwell). Many times, people will argue that if you want something, you can achieve it simply through hard work; however, that is not always the case. In Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers, he explains the significant amount of opportunities that successful people are given. Gladwell uses the example of Joe Flom to explain how timing is a huge factor in success. Early in his career, he was declined by a huge law firm, and had to settle for a firm that was just starting out. Even though this seems like a disadvantage, it turned into an opportunity because the new law firm turned out to grow into one of the best. Another example used in Outliers would…

“Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” What the Roman poet Horace was saying was that when there is an obstacle in our way, our true colors will radiate. I could not agree more. When we as human beings feel passionate about achieving a goal, we may learn something new of ourselves, maybe a new trait that we did not know we possessed, when we reach new heights we did not know we could push ourselves towards. Challenges are similar to tests. Challenges are faced every day, but how we respond to them determines how strong we really are. Prime examples are superheroes and students that move dramatically.…
Throughout time, people have had to go through change. Whether it had been moving to a new city or starting a new job, people all around the world have to deal with it. Every person that has endured change has had their own way to handle it. Some people complain and fail to comply with the fact that change will happen and others strive to be a part of the future to come. Dr. Spencer Johnson took note of this when he wrote “Who Moved My Cheese.” This simple story demonstrated the ways that many people deal with change. Using evidence from the story, I have to come to the conclusion that the best way to deal with change is the same way the Sniff and Scurry did, immediately adapt when change comes.…
Some people go through life contemplating on if they really know their true sexuality. Many people know right off the bat they are heterosexual. Other people have questions about whether they like one sex or the other. In the story, “Better Be Ready ‘Bout Half Past Eight,” written by Alison Baker, Zach had spent a lot of years knowing that he wanted to be a woman. Byron, a friend from work, was not ready to see his friend have a sex change or accept that he was a homosexual. Through the story, Byron goes through different emotions and even goes as far as trying to be a little more metro sexual himself. He finds that even though having a sex change is not for him, that it could possibly be the right thing for Zack to do. People go their entire life trying to figure what life is all about, sometimes it takes a sex change to help with this process.…
Because success is not easy to achieve for many, it becomes a priceless "commodity." Success becomes every person's dream or illusion. Some people respond to such a dream by taking action through the use of one's talents and strengths to grab it little by little along the course of their lives. A few have luck along their side and so are able to grab success on the large scale as a result of their hard work. Yet others choose not to respond and take a step towards the success they are aiming for. These people are the ones who are stuck in the rut and remain to dream their illusion of success.…

Since humans and other primates share a variety of characteristics, other primates provide important observations about early humans. Homologies between hominids and other primates enhance to behavior because the physiological and cognitive formations that manage to control human demeanor are likely related to those of other primates than to members of other taxonomic groups. The reality of this broad collection of homologous traits, the commodity of the average evolutionary history of the primates, means that nonhuman primates give beneficial examples for understanding the evolutionary ancestry of hominid morphology and for resolving the basis of human nature.…
Every obstacle can be turned into an opportunity through perseverance and dedication. Human nature is associated with the stubbornness to succeed. For example, Harriet Tubman did not let any racial barriers overthrow her. Also, during the colonial period the colonists did not allow themselves to be dominated by the British. Another example is of Andrew Carnegie who headed the Carnegie Steel Industry in the nineteenth century.…
Only a scare amount of people are destined to be the President of the United States, to be astronauts, to be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, or to find a cure for a terminal disease. All of us are capable of significant accomplishments and achievements throughout each of our lives. As Mother Teresa or St. Teresa of Calcutta states this quote, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love,” it signifies extreme importance through society in which people accomplish things rather large or small; love is always present during the accomplishments not matter the size of the achievement. Not everyone is exposed, or afforded, the opportunity to do great things; whether fame, money, or motivation tend to get in the…
Walter Benjamin, Jewish philosopher and cultural critic, once said, “History is created by the victors.” Assuming that this belief is true, the question becomes what then happens to the losers? Carlo Ginzburg presents a similar notion in his book “The Cheese and the Worms.” Rather, his notion is “history is created by the literate.” Historically, the population who could read and write was limited to the well-to-do upper class. This proves to be a problem for historians who seek to know more about the lower class who seemingly left few traces of their lives. Literature has always been an important component in preserving culture and the beliefs of a population, but it cannot be assumed that the “high” and “low”, as Ginzburg refers to the upper and the lower class, had the same experiences or outlook on life. The lower, uneducated class has no way to preserve their way of life other than through oral culture, which can become distorted over the years. During his research Ginzburg stumbled across the 16th century manuscripts of the trial of Domenico…
Everyone is put on this earth with a different circumstance, or opportunities. Everyone has challenges they go through throughout life. We all deal with our problems and obstacles differently. Everyone has the chance to succeed. Not everyone has the same opportunity to, but everyone has the chance to. People have different lives and situations. Some are people are born with all the money they could ever need, and others work all day, just to buy food for their family. Whether you have been working since you were a child, or whether you don’t work until you finish college, you have an opportunity to succeed.…
For example, positivity pushes one to work in pursuit of their goals. In the novel, A Night Divided, Gerta stays positive when trying to escape East Berlin. Her family has been separated by the Berlin Wall; however, that didn’t belittle her hope to one day reunite her family. After building a tunnel, she is able to find her family and escape with her loved ones to the other side of the wall. This is a prime example of how optimism…
