Miles also has a best friend named Zach. Zach is a really talented defender who always encouraged Miles to work harder and get better. However, His encouragements are not always positive. He gives Miles steroids to gain muscle the dirty way. When the boys have their first game, Miles pops the first steroid pill and gets an interception and his team beat the other team, Deer Rapids 35-3. The boys are happy until in they enter the locker room. Coach Stahl yells at the defense for giving up 3 points and ruins the momentum. The problems just keep on coming.…
The book, Last Man Out by Mike Lupica, is a very unique book and I would recommend it to anyone who loves sports, especially football, to read it. The setting of this book is in present-day Boston. The main character is Tommy Gallagher, a 12 year-old boy who loves to play football. The rising action of this book would be that Tommy’s father died because of a fire at a house that he was called to. Because of this Tommy’s sister, Emily, stopped playing the sport she was so good at. Tommy tried to persuade her to keep playing. Tommy kept playing football and kept making…
The book I read was The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. This book is about the rivalry between the two groups which are the Greasers VS. Soc’s. The main characters in this story are Ponyboy, Johnny, Dallas, Darry, Sodapop, and Two-bit. The Soc’s puts Ponyboy Curtis and his best friend Johnny in a bad and dangerous spot. One night at the movies, Ponyboy and Johnny fall in love with Sherri and Marcia after they got Dally, the toughest of the Greasers to stop attempting to get with the girls. Sherri and Marcia are from the snobbish and rich group, the Socs but that doesn’t bother Johnny and Ponyboy from liking them. That night, after the movies, they went to the park and when the Soc’s were beating up on Ponyboy, the small and scared Johnny gets up and stabs a member of the Soc’s. After the stabbing that Johnny did they run away to a church in Windrixville and supply food for a week with only one gun and some money. After staying there for a week the church catches on fire and kids are inside. Johnny and Ponyboy risk their lives to save the kids and unfortunately Johnny dies a little bit after. Then they rumble with the Soc’s and win! They did it for Johnny and that’s what determined them to win.…
Marcus Jordan is a 16 year old boy that Just moved to a new town in the middle of summer. He was on the football team at his previous school and intended to be on the one in his new school, so he practiced by himself at a park. That shows that he is very disciplined and determined (page one, paragraph three). Out of nowhere, this other figure comes in and starts practicing with Marcus. His name was Charlie, and it looked to be like he was in his mid forties. It turns out he's very good at football. Marcus had no idea who this guy was but in the text it describes Marcus having a very competitive nature (page five, paragraph two). Charlie throws the ball too high and it breaks the window of a car. Charlie ditches the crime scene. Marcus could have just as easily ditched too but decides to leave a note with his phone number so he could pay for it, which shows that he's an honest guy (page 8, paragraph 3). There are several examples of this throughout the story, like when he offered to pay for the ice Charlie just took from the store ( page 28 , paragraph 8).…
I think that most types of conflict is used to show the theme, what it means to become a ‘contender’ (by working hard, never giving up, and self-improvement) in Robert Lipsyte’s The Contender because Alfred learns this message and does the work to become a boxer. Evidence of this is when, "You have to start by wanting to be a contender, the man coming up, the man who knows there's a good chance he'll never get to the top, the man who's willing to sweat and bleed to get up as high as his legs and his brains and his heart will take him" (Lipsyte, 25). This shows a character vs. self conflict because Alfred is training everyday and making sure that he works as hard as he physically can. Alfred is so determined to help Aunt Pearl and the rest…
This book “There’s a girl in my hammerlock is about a young female who want to get the attention of a boy named Eric Delong. Last year she joined basketball but she wanted to join the cheerleading team to get his attention but didn't make it in the team so tried out for wrestling because Eric was on the team. Then she joined and was underestimated by all of the boys just because she was a girl. The team treated her differently and she has to deal with people criticizing her.…
Hope Solo My Story By Hope Solo, was written to entertain the reader. The main purpose of this book was to get Hope’s story out there so she sounds like a mean person with no feelings. Hope Said some things that were rude about one of her teammates because she wasn't started in an important game. Hope had a meltdown and he could be one of the reasons she wrote this book. Hope was upset and embarrassed the whole entire team. Her teammates hated her and the girl who she thought she was close to back stabbed her. Hope took a break and hoped things would get better. The latter did after the head coach was fired and replaced with Pia. Pia was an upbeat coach she sung to us during practice and was always happy.…
Each individual creates their own choices to stumble upon their experience which may either trigger awful consequences or opportunities on their new path in life and into the world. J.C. Burke’s “The Story of Tom Brennan”, employs the story of the protagonist, Tom Brennan, and his family as they embark upon new journeys and decisions to restart their new lives in Coghill. Their horrific past explains the reason of their move from Mumbilli to their grandmother’s house. The reputation of the Brennan’s was once great and happiness filled their lives, however all is lost when Daniel, Luke and Nicole had a car accident. Football was once Tom’s only favourite sport. Unfortunately, in his new world, it meant nothing. It is just a game to fill in the time. He has lost his edge for he feels uncomfortable “For me, playing footy would never be the same. Here in Coghill, it would just be something to fill in the time – the endless, endless time”.…
The two main characters in The Stotan are Walker and Jeff. Walker is the main character in this book; he narrates the book by writing in his journal. Walker is the captain of the swimming team in his high school. He has many issues in his life for example his brother being a drug addicted and his parents being old for the age that they had him. He does his best not to let any of it get to him and always does his best to encourage his team mates during the season. Jeff is the oldest out of all of the friends and team mates. He is also to be considered the most mature in the entire group. He has a reputation of being considered a “tough guy” and was diagnosed with a blood disease and is becoming much weaker every day and is expected to die. In the beginning of the book the coach of the Robert frost high school swim team ask for some volunteers for stotan week. Four of the boys on the swim team decide to sign up. When the boys signed up they did not realize that their entire winter break would be spent doing 4 hour work outs during stotan week. During stotan week the four boys began to get to know each other pretty well and eventually started sharing things about their personal lives. The theme of this book is that you only know someone’s name and not their story of their life and what they have been threw and to not judge others without getting to know them. This book affected my view on everyday activities because I truly don’t know people but I still judge them witch I should not but instead get to know the person.…
I'm here to inform you of this wonderful and horrible relationship between a clueless girl and a dangerous boy in the novel Jake Riley; Irreparably damaged by Rebecca Davis and why you should check it out sometime. Set sometime in the 1990s or current time, it's about a girl named Lainey. Even though Lainey is fast and smart, she just can't seem to get away from one particular friend. Although there are many instances of this ‘friendship’ being crooked, she just can't seem to stay away, and this confusing yet somehow touching truth is shown in the novel when Lainey is thinking to herself, “I hate Jake’s guts, but somehow the fact that everybody gangs up on him and thinks that he’ll get help in the place that damaged him makes me want to beat…
In this quotation, Dickens is trying to show the sympathy Charles Darnay got from the people, who moments ago where cheering to get him killed. "(...) tears immediately rolled down several ferocious countenances," Dickens wrote. He wanted the reader to know the nature of these people in the French Revolution. Dickens wanted us to see the cold hearted ways of these people, but he also wanted us to see why they did it,…
“Conflict theory shows how major patterns of inequality in society produce social stability in some circumstances and social change in orders” (Brym, Roberts, Strohschen, lie 2015:18). I would use conflict theory to explain women running for office in this campaign and why men are more than women in terms of election in different parties. Research and theory associated with studying gender issues propelled the sociology of gender from the margins to become a central feature of the discipline ( Why is it that there are more men involved in elections compare to women? Women have to be given the chance to compete in the election, showing sign of equality amongst men and women which is the fundamental principals of human rights and…

American society today is made up of all three of the theories. In my opinion, these theories all thrive off each other as a whole. I feel that the chain is something like this, Symbolic Interactionism, as well as Functionalism, lead into Conflict Theory. However, I feel that Conflict Theory is the largest component American society is made from, here is why!…
So what exactly happened? According to the authors, what was supposed to be an innocent “tradition of the powder puff football game” arranged by the senior girls for the junior girls, turned to an out of control game of humiliation and revenge. Girls were being pushed and kicked, splattered with paint and human feces. Later in the text we find out that, pig parts which were supplied by one of the parents were thrown at the poor girls. Someone put bucket over one girl’s head and hid it with a baseball bat. Parents of one girl, who lost consciousness during that “game,” testified later that “the victims were threatened with more violence if they left the field.” After the beatings and humiliations ended, five girls were sent to the hospital, one with a broken ankle, and another with a concussion so serious it caused memory loss, another to receive 10 stitches in her scalp. Every rule and principle of that game was violated, and per Mike Green, Northbrook Police deputy chief “many of the students could face criminal charges.” Not everyone; however, was part of the vicious game. The tape of that horrible incident, that was released and examined by the school officials, and later used by lawyers including Rollin Suskin, who represented several of the victims, also…
