Book Summary: The Red Queen

The book the Red Queen is about a girl who lives in an area where the silvers have the power over the reds but Mare finds out she doesn't fit in with these labels. The silvers are described God and goddess like. They have silver blood and powers like some can control metal, fire, and can read others thoughts. The Reds are the lower class. They are human like with red blood. They have no powers and they work. When reds are the age of eighteen and out of work they are conscripted to go to war.

When Mare's best friend loses their job she has to save them from conscription. She meets with a friend who leads her to a girl named Farley. For Mare to save her friend she must give Farley two crowns. Mare is used to stealing so she goes with her gifted sister to work where Gisa, her sister, works as a apprenticed seamstress. She is interrupted when a terrorist attack by the Red Guard strikes. The area is filled of chaos and silvers are hurting reds. Mare finds the face of the leader of the attack and sees Farley. Visas tries to help Mare and attempts to steal from a silver and is punished by the bones in her hand to crushed.

Mare feels guilty for what happened to Gisa so she goes home late. In her meantime she stays outside of a
bar stealing from people when she meets a strange male that goes by the name Cal. They chat for a while and his curiosity about the life of a red made Mare question him. By the end of the night Cal has given her two crowns. The next morning, what Mare thinks is inspection they come for her. Mare has no idea what is going on, but she realizes she is getting a job to serve silvers at the Queenstrial. The Queenstrial is where other female silvers compete for the princes hand in marriage. When Mare realizes who the prince is she is shocked to find out the prince is Cal.

During a silver who goes by the name Evangeline is showing off her power Mare unexpectedly shows off hers. Mare, a red girl , becomes the center of attention when she is shooting lighting out of her hands. Mare is cornered by silvers and forced to meet with the Royal family. They give her a new identity and for exchange they let her brothers go home from war and free her best friend from conscription. She is engaged to prince Maven, the younger brother of Cal. As her duties as a new princesses she is taught as a princess. Cals fiancé, Evangeline harasses her for her accident at Queenstrial. In one of her classes she meets a silver of the name Julian, who is the brother of the late queen. He knows Mare and instead of using her, he helps her. Mare becomes allies or friends with the princes and they help her sneak away to see her family. When she visits home she finds out her brother was killed and she ends up telling her family and best friend about her abilities. Before leaving she meets with an old friend and joins the Scarlett Guard. When she is about to leave she has a heartbreaking moment with her friend who she knows is going to join the Guard, and wishes he wouldn't.

Mare goes up in higher levels in her training and becomes closer to Maven.
One night when she is being served by the girl who she was serving with at Queenstrial leads her to the meeting of the Scarlet Guard. She is ends up finding out that she in the not only royalty wanting to join. Maven becomes apart of the guard and gives names of those who should be eliminated for the revolution. During training Evangeline challenges Mare in the arena and beats her, A couple of nights before the leaving party Cal helps Mare with her dance moves, Mare find outs Cal will be leading his own legion to war and is hurt by it. One night while they are dancing in the moonlight she confronts him about it and he kisses
her.

I would recommend this book to anybody who likes drama and action. I like this book because there is so much going on. I like how Mare is stubborn and yet has a caring heart. She is very selfless and quite rebellious. The story is written so well and descriptive that is feels said I'm there. I haven't finished it but it is a good book and I can't wait to read the second one.
