In the novel "Trash" by Andy Mulligan, tells the story of three young boys named, Raphael, Gardo and Jun Jun but goes by Rat, live upon the acres of Trash in Behala (dumpsite) going through it hoping to find anything they can sell or recycle. Their lives are rugged, poverty stricken, unadventurous. This changes when Raphael and Gardo find something in the trash in which, turned out to be a bag with eleven thousand pesos and a wallet in which contains the ID of man named Jose Angelico. Concerned by police searching everywhere for the bag, the duo of Raphael and Gardo come upon Rat for assistance to hid the valuable bag. Throughout the whole novel, shows the unimaginable poverty these people go through in which they have to endure day in and day out in which unfortunately,also leads to corruption .
In the very beginning of the novel, Andy Mulligan illustrates the struggle, families have to go through. "I was a trash boy since I was old enough to move without help and pick things up.That was what?-three years old, and I was sorting.(pg4"). This shows how early children start to develop daily routines while being in this situation. An example of this,is when Raphael's says “The dangerous bit was going to be the locker. They’d assume right away that we were thieving.” page 40. This means that when anyone sees you and think that you are stealing, they would report to the police straight away. And the police would most likely send you to prison. Another example for this is when Raphael says “a couple of kids looked at us with a kind of mean-eyed suspicion, like this was their territory – which it was.” Page 39. This means that if they get angry or overly protective of their territory, they might tell the police to get rid of
