How JROTC Builds Character and Leadership
Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program can be a four-year journey of life changing experiences that build character and leadership. I was a freshman when I first joined JROTC, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. Throughout my student life of being a cadet, I was challenged physically, mentally, and emotionally; additionally, I was able to learn more about teamwork and leadership. The curriculum consists of practical exercises that directly target an individual’s leadership and character. JROTC has taught me what I would not have learned in any other class in high school. Cadets, including myself, have overcome fears and have formed lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories. Overall, they have found JROTC has molded a sense of character within them just it has for me.

JROTC is unique in that it uses a clear chain of command that consists of the students themselves. The fact that the organization is cadet-run is great because it gives us the independence to make decisions that impact us directly and we are free to make the organization our own. Personally, I gained more confidence, better people skills, and personality. JROTC brings out the best in cadets because of the high level of maturity expected of them from the
Lee 2 instructors and the huge student involvement in running the program. The program also prepares us for life after high school, helping us to learn our personality types and how to interact with other types. We learn to step outside our comfort zone and become acquainted with the world around us; the world we are to survive in after graduation.

Many people think that JROTC is a recruiting service for the military. In reality, it is a great program that teaches leadership to students and is a worthwhile investment in one’s future, whatever their interests may be. I fell in love with JROTC because it is a place where I am surrounded by friends; not just good friends but wonderful people who respected me for whom I am.

    You can earn ribbons and medals for different things you have done in the program like raiders, drill, color guard and many other things.     Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage are the seven basic values of the army. JROTC helped me grow as a person and let me interact with people that I would have never interacted with before. I developed social skills and a good work ethic during my time in the JROTC. Over 50% of students in high school were in the program. I helped over a 100 students with basic army movements and discipline skills.
