CNS news, “U.S. Spending At Least $18.6 Million per day to Incarcerate Illegal Aliens” (Edwin Mora, Oct. 2010). This amount calculates to roughly $679 billion annually. On the other hand the Taxpayers are only spending an estimated $12 billion annually on border control (Ryan Vetter, 8-15-2013). This money could be better spent preventing the illegal aliens. Instead it is being used to house them. The security that the $12 billion provides is mostly spent on inspections and trade facilitation. Roughly 70% is spent to accommodate goods coming into the United States (Ryan Vetter, 8-15-2013). The main purpose of this is to attempt to stop drug trafficking. Drugs are a major contributor to the criminal and immigration trends in the country. International criminals have also created a threat with human trafficking due to exploitable borders. This is the act of kidnapping and selling people for different forms of sexual exploitation and slavery. The national security became a much hotter topic after the devastating terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon on September 11th, 2001, causing a war against terrorism that has sparked international and internal conflict as any war will do. Resources being directed toward pursuing the criminal organization take away from the wars we have on our own soil. The only solution I see to the problem is properly directing taxpayer money to the protection of our nation.
In conclusion, border control is a greatly utilized resource though execution of securing the borders is greatly under financed. The Money used to finance a prison life for each of the criminal illegal aliens is 56 times greater than the amount to prevent their access to the country in the first place. The government is formed in order to protect the citizens of their country, and the elected officials of the United States government are the only people who can make this change happen. This country is a democracy and the people choose who represent them. Take the initiative and vote. References
