In the non-fiction piece, Naked and truthful in the Bronx by Lillian Ross demonstrates how the actors behave in a certain way and are spending great amount of money to portray the “poor” in social society. Firstly, in this is story the film that is made has all come down to money. As the producer says, “This is mainstream, but good. You can get top dollar for this.” This reveals how the story is all about money business, they do not care about what is the reality of the poor society.…
The category I chose to explore was gender, gender can be a broad term that can include a person’s sex (male, female, or chose not to answer). This category extends to difference in treatment in the workplace according to gender, such as compensation, the hiring/firing/training/benefits process. In the case of Anderson v. City & County of San Francisco, Speckman (2014), indicated that 35 male and female deputies from San Francisco Sheriff’s Department filed a consolidated claim against both the city and county claiming discrimination against male deputies in violation of Title VII and California Fair Employment and Housing Act (Speckman, 2014). In October 2006 the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department implemented a new policy to prohibit male deputies from holding supervisory…
One of the reasons that many women get abused and harassed is the fact that they are women. These women’s gender determines how they are going to be treated when working in these types of jobs. Being a female can place these…
Anne Bradstreet-in “The Burning of Our House,” Anne was the narrator of this poem in which she expressed how she felt when her home caught fire. The Entire poem was based on Anne’s emotional state during her time of despair and how her faith helped her through. As I read through the poem I noticed that she spoke of her religious beliefs and her relationship with God throughout the poem. “And to my God my heart did cry,” (8). In order to understand and relate to this poem the reader must have some form of religious belief. Anne spoke on how God took away her material items, but her faith helped her comprehend and understand that they never belonged to her in the beginning. “I blest His name that gave and took,” (14). God can…
Imagine a world where women have a very little amount of rights, where women being hired was rare, and where only women cleaned. The only reason our world isn’t like that anymore is because of Betty Friedan, and others like her. Betty Friedan experienced having little rights her whole life, and one day wondered if other women felt the same way she did.…
The book detailed the frustration of women who were expected to rely on their children and husbands for their happiness.” This was the beginning of a feminist move and empowerment. A bringing together of women, with a choice had started this decade. The 30s had a decade of no choice, strong rules, and no revolutions. The 60s started empowerment which was the complete opposite, starting the women's rights movement and managed to be the start of years of gained…
I personally believe being apart of a sports team is a very positive thing to be apart of. Being on a team is not only fun because you are doing somthing you love, you are doing that with friends that think the same things. Although sports can be very competitive and time concumming, they are still to me considered a positive thing. You might be busy all the time with your sports practices and games, but you are ingaged in a fun and positive activity that you love to do. Sports might take a persons attention off of their main responsibilities but for most, at least school, sports go by the rules if you don’t have a certain grade or have missing assignments you can’t participate. This is more of a motivation to get your school work done.…
This film portrays these women shopping for fashionable hats, smoking and lounging in their undergarments, and marching to a soundtrack of hip-hop rhythms. They are more than new women, they are 21st-century women in their casual manner, informal speech, and attitudes toward men. With this approach, the film modernizes political foremothers in an attempt to winning new audiences in a postfeminist age. In an age when most young women do not like the idea of the feminist label, the film invites them to connect with feminists who are single, young, determined, courageous, independent, fashionable, and physically…
This idea itself lead Betty Friedan write the book “The Feminine Mystique”, an immediate best seller, which represented how harsh women were treated and the secrets that stay unspoken and buried. This was an imminent indication of change, also ideas as of Alice Paul, an American suffrage leader, who lead the first amendment campaign in the US. She also advocated the needs for the right to suffrage and introduced militant tactics. It fits the theme of encounter as one can explore and differentiate women without rights and with rights. Encountering this is historically significant as women get to live to their fullest which was denied in the past. It also lays importance on the development of women and the tussle for their…
This article focuses on “girl watching” within the workplace as a debatable form of sexual harassment. One of the most important findings within sexual harassment is the ambiguity in actually defining specific acts of this common issue. For me, I have always felt uncomfortable with the looks and sounds some men may give me while out in public or my workplace specifically which is why I can relate to this article. Some men claim that women are too sensitive or that they often misconstrue men’s intentions. Some women claim that men just “don’t get it.” In-depth interviews were conducted with 43 employed men and women to examine a particular social practice of “girl watching” as a way to understand these gender differences. Girl watching is still…
Firstly, the belief that there is a constant presence of sexism in the places of employment is an irrational fiction exaggerated by neo-feminists who believe that men in the workplace absolutely despise and objectify women. Women in today’s society hear these rumors about sexism and are extremely discouraged because they think that no matter how hard they may work, that a man will be chosen anyway. Tales such as this are perpetuated by the new wave of feminism and they are extremely effective because it plays to the victim complex of a person or group. This is not to say that sexism never happens in the workplace. The U.S. EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) received over 14,000 complaints of…
For many years women have had unfair treatment in their workplace and it had gone unjustified. Even though in 1964 the Civil Rights Act was pasted women still get discriminated and harassed in different work fields. Sexual harassment has went from verbal to a physical demeanor of sexual nature. Although women have gained overall access to the workplace, sex discrimination still persists in additional ways. There multiple examples of potentially unlawful gender discrimination that women face. Hiring, resigning and firing are the three problems women often face within the workplace. Harassment does not have to be sexual but may include harassment about ones gender.…
Every year women across the world seek counsel from Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) due to unwanted sexual advances, hostile work environment, lack of management training, neglecting to respond to employee complaints, and sex discrimination. In certain corporations such as prisons and farm houses women are seen as prey to men. Female workers have decided to not endure the harassment, unwanted advances, to be ignored by management, and not be judged or taken advantage of because of their sex. I was motivated by the two articles to bring awareness of sexual harassment by men that are in management positions and take advantage of their roles in the workplace.…
The Lion King is one of the most successful animated Disney movies in the past twenty years. It mostly revolves around the life of Simba, before and after the death of his father, Mufasa. After Mufasa’s death, Scar (Mufasa’s brother/killer), tells Simba to go far away as Scar takes over the Pride Land. Simba’s development into a young adult during his hiatus is crucial to the story arc as he grows into the lion strong enough to reclaim the Pride Lands from his uncle. The Lion King is a Disney animated musical drama because it has songs throughout the movie in some of it’s most important moments that are sung by the character’s, includes emotional and unexpected events that are key dramatic elements, while being a children’s movie that teaches lessons which pertains to every age group.…
