Born in the USA does a phenomenal job talking about the broken system of maternity care and how women are treated so poorly in hospitals around the United States. I love how Dr. Marsden Wager gives advice as how to fix the system and how to support mothers in order to fulfill the best birthing experience we can and should offer.
I did not know much about Dr. Wagner before reading his book. I remember seeing him in the documentary The Business of Being Born but I did not realize how influential he was and how educated he was on birth. To say he is qualified to talk about the broken maternity care system is mere understatement. I wasn’t sure if it was the right path for me. I wasn’t sure if I was strong enough to push through all that I needed to in order to become the midwife that women in our society need. After reading so many articles and literature pertaining to childbirth and midwifery including the ones required for this class I have come to finally realized why I chose this path from the very beginning. It’s not because I want something to try to make a living off of. It’s not because I don’t want to go to medical school so I can be lazy. It’s not because it’s the only thing left to choose from.
