Borrelia And Lyme Disease
Bacteria are tiny forms of life that can only be seen under a microscope. There is a parasitic type of bacteria known to cause Lyme disease, this is called Borrelia burgdorferi. (Microbewiki.kenyon.edu, 2017) Lyme disease is caused by the bite of infected ticks. Both large ticks and small ticks can transmit the bacteria however small ticks are difficult to see. They can attach themselves to any area of the body but are often found in the groin, armpits or scalp and in most cases must be attached to a person for 36-48 hours in order for the lime disease bacterium to be transmitted. It is often thought that whooping cough is an outdated disease, due to the many ways we now have to combat the pathogen, but every year almost 400,000 people die due to infection with Bordetella pertussis (1, 41). Bordetella pertussis is a gram-negative coccobacillus bacterium, which causes whooping cough in humans (1, 41). The bacterium is spread by air borne particles or mucus droplets and is highly contagious. Although there is no known reservoir for the pathogen humans can often be asymptomatic, due to vaccination or immunity, and can easily spread the disease from person to person through coughing or sneezing (1, 41). Once inhaled the pathogen enters the respiratory tract and attaches to the ciliated respiratory epithelium. There…

Plague is a disease that is caused by a bacterium called Yersinia Pestis (“Plague: Ecology and Transmission”) Yersinia Pestis is a bacterium that is most commonly found in rodents and other small mammals. When transmitted to humans, the subsequent disease, plague, takes hold (“Plague: Ecology and Transmission”). The disease has three forms, all of which are deadly in their own right and were a part of the Black Death outbreak. The first and most common form is the bubonic plague. The bubonic plague is usually spread by infected fleas that bite humans. The symptom that gave this form of the disease its name is the occurrence of one or more swollen lymph nodes that are called “Buboes.” ("Plague: Symptoms") The septicemic plague is the second form and it is transmitted…

Bacteria can get into your body in many ways; the first one is Droplet infection so when you cough, sneeze or talk you expel tiny droplets full of pathogens from your breathing system and then other people breathe that in. The second is Direct Contact which means that some diseases are spread by direct contact of the skin. The third is through contaminated food and drink so when you eat raw or undercooked food or you drink water containing sewage can spread disease for example diarrhoea and food poisoning (salmonella). The fourth is being infected by bacteria through any animal or insect bite for example malaria is spread by a mosquito that contains the malaria virus biting you.…

They exist on virtually every living thing or object in the environment i.e. dirt, water, caves, trees, dead animals, and within everybody living on earth. Its nutrition is from its surroundings. We carry bacteria in the body, mainly in the intestines, on the genitalia or on the skin. Bacteria can be good or bad. Meningitis is a bacterial infection, this can be life threating to a young baby and is most common in young children. It is an infection of the membranes covering the brain and/or spinal cord, this is a reason it can be life-threatening. MRSA is another big bacteria illness, this commonly affect hospitals and is due to lack of hygiene. Food poisoning is a common cause of illness caused by bacteria. This is because bacteria lives on food. If cooked and food has not reached a high enough temperature to kill off bacteria then it can cause the bacteria to rapidly grow and cause sickness to a person. The types of food poisoning are; salmonella, E. coli, norovirus, campylobacter, listeria, clostridium perfringens. These are also linked with viruses too. Also most sexual transmitted diseases are a bacterial infection i.e. syphilis, gonorrhea. Also Lyme disease, this is spread by the bite of a deer ticks most common around wooded, rural areas. The common states it is found in are North and South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Georgia, Tennessee, and Oklahoma. Most cases happen in the spring and summer. Only about 1 in 1,000 wood and dog ticks carry the bacteria. The infected ticks can also spread bacteria if someone crushes the ticks with their fingers and/or pull them out of an animal’s fur. Scientists who study the ticks notice that the ticks’ eggs notice that, according to Howard Ricketts, that there is ‘minute polar staining bacilli’ in freshly laid eggs of infected ticks.”…
