Have you ever been so selfish and greedy about something that you did not want to share? In the story, "Both Sides of The Fence”, a greedy and selfish man named Alberto learns a very valuable lesson from his neighbor Juan. Alberto learns a lifelong lesson that his selfish pride is very foolish, and being kind and generous is more rewarding.
In the beginning of the story, Alberto was seen as being very selfish and wanted his apple tree all to himself. Alberto also brags that he has the best apple tree around town. "It bears the finest blossoms and the finest apples." "That makes me the finest man in the Pueblo." This quote makes Alberto seem that he only cares about being on top instead of others. He thinks he is the best. "Somehow the thought that others' benefited from his tree lessoned Alberto's enjoyment." This statement shows how he despised the other people that gazed upon his tree, and how he hated to share its beauty.
One spring, Alberto took action and built a high fence around the tree, so only he could see its beauty. When a branch grew over the fence and into the neighbor’s yard, he became furious. His beautiful tree was now exposed, and he could not simply cut the branch off, because it would ruin his. "To damage such find a tree would be wrong.” This statement expresses how Alberto worried about his apple tree. He worried about the branch all through the spring, and summer. When fall finally came, he tried to pretend it didn't matter. "Then one day, Alberto discovered an apple cake in front of his doorstep." "Gracias," read the note. It was signed "Juan." Alberto considered the note as a tease, and showing that Juan was rubbing his theft of his apples in his face. This was Alberto's last straw!
Alberto was now determined to make Juan pay for stealing the apples from his beautiful tree. Alberto decided to take Juan to court because he used his apples without his permission. Alberto quickly landed on his face when Juan
