Botswana Investment
The country of my choice is Botswana. It is one of the richest countries in Africa, in terms of GDP and GDP per capita. It is also one of the least corrupt countries in Africa according to Transparency International. Most of it’s income comes from natural resources, the main one being diamonds. However the government had also made an effort to diversify the economy resulting in tourism and financial services becoming important sectors for the Botswana economy.

The three firms that I chose to invest in are:

1) Debswana Diamond Company Ltd.: As the name suggests this is a diamond extraction and production company. It controls some of the largest diamond formations in the world. Since diamonds account for a third of the GDP of the country and also 90% of the exports this company would be a good company to invest in.

2) BancABC: This company is one of the leading providers of financial services in Africa. It is a Botswana company that operates in numerous Southern African nations. It offers commercial banking as well as other financial services. Botswana is known for it’s superior financial services in the Southern African regions and BancABC is the leading financial service provider in Botswana.

3) Wilderness Holding Ltd.: This is a Botswana company that owns the world’s top eco-tourism brands. This company operates various safari tours, own a hotel line and also an airlines. Since the demand for eco-tourism is increasing at a rapid pace worldwide and Botswana is becoming a leading location for tourism this company would be a good company to invest in.

Cecil Rhodes, the founder of De Beers, got his start by renting water pumps to miners during the diamond rush that started in 1871, when an 83.5 carat diamond was found on Colesburg Kopje (present day Kimberley), South Africa. He invested the profits of this operation into buying up claims of small mining operators, with his operations soon expanding into a separate mining company. He soon secured funding from the Rothschild family, who would finance his business expansion. De Beers Consolidated Mines was formed in 1888 by the merger of the companies of Barney Barnato and Cecil Rhodes, by which time the company was the sole owner of all diamond mining operations in the country. The name derived from the De Beers brothers, Diederik Arnoldus and Johannes Nicholas de Beers, Boers whose farm had…

Historically diamonds were extremely scarce, found only in the river beds of India and the jungles of Brazil , and as such were highly prized by nobility around the world. In 1870, large reserves were found in South Africa, and with that the idea of them becoming more widely available was borne. Production levels of individual miners were restricted by their lack of equipment so local business men aided them by renting them costly mining equipment. One such businessman, Cecil Rhodes, began purchasing claims to the production of the diamond mines. By 1887 the company he set up, DeBeers, owned the rights to all the mines in South Africa; “DeBeers were initially able to develop their complete control in South Africa…

Sub-Saharan Africa has over approximately 218 million people living in extensive poverty, however not all African countries are poor. There are many rich and prospering countries in the continent. Africa has a great potential for oil and gas and isn’t poor in that area at all.…
