Bound Man
The Bound Man by Ilse Aighinger

The thing that I found most compelling in the story ‘‘The Bound Man’’ was that the man was not worried about being released from the rope, rather he wanted to be bound and with that disadvantage he learned to adapt with it and live life as if he wasn’t bound at all. The reason why I find his situation and his own reaction to it so compelling is because while I was reading the story, I was putting myself in his situation and I would not of thought to react in such a way as he. In the beginning, where the man had awoken from his sleep to find that he was bound, he found happiness in that situation. Through out the story there were people who were amused by his situation, but also had sympathy in which the bound man was completely against; he took that situation and made it seem like it was not a problem, that perplexed me. - But still I find it all truly compelling.

''His arms were tied to each other but not to his body, and had some free play too. This made him smile.'' pg. 68-69 Even though his arms were not tied to his body, I felt myself becoming uncomfortable. To wake up bounded, I would see no good in that situation besides still being alive. Not only was he bounded, he was outside and woke up to flies around him which made the situation even worse. I read this story and put myself in his position; I could only contradict all his actions. My perspective comes from me not being an outside person whatsoever. I come from a family that if decided, we even go camping or to a national park, we don’t go in tents we rent out a cabin, lodge or a hotel. I wasn’t raised to be an outside person or to even like animals, so when I think of waking up to flies and being tied up outside I think of myself going crazy, screaming for help. It amazed me however, to see that someone can wake up in the position the bound man was in, without crying out for help. It seems carless to me, carless about life... But also so brave and courageous

After what felt like hours the tortured groan of the heavy iron door announced the arrival of an unknown guest. As the man walked in the room he turned and smiled at us causing me to scoff within Alice’s mind; “I hear that you’ve been hearing voices” the man asked in a sickly sweet tone. “Kill him” i sneer in the most sinister way and with a slight nod of the head my corrupted little puppet jumped at him tearing at the flesh of his meaty neck with her sharp little teeth causing him to stumble to the ground as he sputtered violently on the crimson liquid that spilt down his convulsing body. Alice then began playing with the man’s pulsing laceration as if a toddler were playing with their food while giggling manically. Only to be halted by a pair of hands wrapping around our body and violently throwing us across the cell all I could hear were the grotesque cracks as each bone broke and Alice’s sweet screams of pain as she is kicked across the room until she was nothing but a whimpering heap in the corner. “Die” the tall man screamed as he picked Alice up by the legs and slammed us against the cold walls of the cell with a sickening crack causing one final screech of pain from Alice to ricochet through the vile halls of the prison as she slumped to the ground with black oozing from her terrified eyes and her mouth that was left…

Jennie Dixiannas’ act starts when she ascends the rope to get to the top of the hippodrome, similarly this process shows that from a young age she has had a hard time relating with others in society due to the psychological scaring done from past events. “First, she climbed a rope, which slithered snake like between and around her legs as she rose higher”(28). Ever since her mother bled out while giving birth and passed away it has been a struggle for Jennie to accept it so she just tries to put it in the back of her mind and distract herself from the haunting scene of her mother dying. The rope symbolizes as a snake which slithers between and around her legs. Furthermore, this portion of the act indicates the beginning of the endless raping done by her father after her mother passed away. As a result, she had to adjust to the way things were which was a lot for a 6 year old child. Similarly, “Jennie became a walking phantom, the living receptacle of unlived lives” (33). This example illustrates’ how hard it was for her to deal with the hardships of living in the real world with nobody to help her with her problems.…

When someone hears the phrase “held captive”, usually wild animals come to mind. No one ever really thinks of humans as being held captive. However, in Daniel Quinn’s 1992 novel Ishmael, the character of Ishmael tries teaching the story’s narrator to think of ways in which he has been held captive by both internal and external forces. Society has a way of making people feel like they need to do certain things to be successful, so basically society is holding people captive by holding them back from living the way they want to. As humans, we also have ways of holding ourselves captive. Ishmael compares our captivity with a form of blindness. Throughout the novel, Quinn helps the reader realize what they are blind to and what they are blinded by.…

At the very beginning when you reach the mountain you’re asked “Pull the next one up” (2), and from there, after satisfied with what you two achieved, the other climber lends his hand to “Pull the next hand over” (13), showing you a chain reaction to a good deed. However, this transition from man to slave was not completed in the case of the author, and this is thanks to all the events or moments previous to his realisation that he was no longer going to be part of that business. Those moments are illustrated in the narrative, and they show the way they have affected and the influence they have had on the outcome of Douglass’ life. As these events or moments encouraged the author, he managed to make a step forward towards the status that all men should have on the United States: to be a free man. This work allowed Frederick Douglass to exhibit and condemn the situation to the whole nation. In addition, it was a clear example that the transformation was both possible and needed, since slaves were not the only ones affected by the situation, but masters as…

In his foreword of Of Human Bondage, William Somerset Maugham narrated how the novel came to be. He explained that one day he was assaulted by the memories of his past. He grew restless and he knew he had to do something about it. And he just thought that the only way to be free from the past was to write it. He quit the theatre for two years and put the story that would not let him rest on paper. He wrote about Philip Carey, a club-foot boy that was orphaned at the early age of nine. He stated that it was an autobiographical novel, a combination of both reality and fiction, to which he owed to the fact that, “The emotions are my own.” Many parallel situations in their lives were presented in the novel such as their losses, their relatives, deformities, attitude, travels, careers, and masochistic tendencies. The likeness is striking but one may wonder how much of it is true.…
