A spinal cord injury is a destructive event that occurs to someone and interrupts all aspects of their life, it causes paralysis of the body, making it difficult for an individual to do the things many people take for granting including their self-care and even the ability to use the bathroom (Atkins, 2014). In addition to a spinal cord injury, many people are susceptible to several health risks because of their inability to care for themselves or not being able to tell when something is wrong with their body as a result of their paralysis. Thus, having programs like the bowel and bladder is so vital to these individuals because an inadequate bowel or bladder regimen can cause numerous health risks or be fatal. Other risks can be for the bladder, urinary tract infection, erosion, bladder cancer, sexual dysfunction, and renal failure. For the bowel, some risks are fecal impaction, fecal incontinence, abdominal distention, and constipation, and autonomic dysreflexia, which can lead to death (Akkus, Sezer & Uguelu, 2015). For that reason, the management of bowel and bladder function for individuals with SCI is a complicated duty that requires meticulous consideration and understanding by all participants of the patient’s treatment team (Staats, 2014).
