Bowling For Caroline Analysis
BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE

"BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE", DIRECTED BY MICHAEL MOORE, DEALS WITH THE PROBLEMS OF GUN CRIME IN AMERICA. THE MAIN PURPOSE OF THIS FILM IS TO PERSUADE AMERICAN PEOPLE TO CHANGE THEIR IDEAS ABOUT GUNS AND GUN LAWS. MOORE CONSTANTLY REFERS TO OTHER COUNTRIES SUCH AS CANADA AND THEIR GUN POLICIES TO BACK UP HIS ARGUMENTS FOR INCREASED GUN REGULATION. HE IS SUCCESSFULLY ABLE TO COUNTER ARGUE ANY REASON GIVEN BE PRO-GUN SUPPORTERS AS TO THE REASON WHY AMERICA HAS THE HIGHEST GUN RELATED CRIMES AND DEATH, EVEN THOUGH OTHER COUNTRIES HAVE SIMILAR ATTITUDE TOWARDS VIOLENCE. THE SCENES THAT BEEN SELECTED FOCUS ON DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF THE FILM, WHICH PRESENT MOORE'S ABILITY TO PERSUADE HIS AUDIENCE INTO HIS WAY OF VIEWING GUN CRIME.

YOU TURN ON THE NEWS AND WHAT DO YOU HEAR? MURDER, HOMICIDE AND KIDNAPPING. THERE IS SO MUCH EXPOSURE OF CRIMES IN THE NEWS THAT THEY DO IT TO SUBCONSCIOUSLY MAKE PEOPLE GO OUT TO BUY THINGS, TO KEEP THE GREAT US ECONOMY GOING. THE POLITICIANS SCARE PEOPLE INTO STOCKPILING FOR THE Y2K BUG, THE POTENTIAL CHEMICAL ATTACKS FROM BIO-TERRORISTS SO PEOPLE RUN OUT TO BUY DUCT TAPE AND PLASTIC AND SEAL UP THEIR HOUSES. THERE IS WAY TOO MUCH FEAR IN THE US THAT IS EXPLOITED BY THE MEDIA AND THE POLITICIANS. GET A GUN BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO PROTECT YOURSELF. YOUR NEIGHBOR MOST LIKELY HAS ONE. AT THIS POINT MICHAEL MOORE FAILS TO PERSUADE ME. IT FELT LIKE HE IS MANIPULATING ME INTO THINKING THAT IT'S THE FEAR THAT CAUSES THE AMERICANS TO KILL. I THINK THIS WAS THE WEAKEST ARGUMENT IN HIS FILM. IT MIGHT BE TRUE IN SOME RESPECTS BUT HE FAILS TO TRY TO LOOK FOR OTHER ANSWERS THAN THE ONES HE HAS PRESENTED. COULD IT BE THE LACK OF GUN CONTROL? THE LAX CONTROLS OF SALES OF MILITARY STYLE WEAPONS, HANDGUNS AND OTHER NON-HUNTING STYLE WEAPONS? THE LACK OF EDUCATION ON GUN USE? THERE ARE SO MANY REASONS AND FACTORS BUT THOSE WERE NOT DISCUSSED BECAUSE THAT'S NOT HIS …show more content…
I THINK HE WAS REALLY EFFECTIVE. I ESPECIALLY LIKE THE PART WHERE HE HAS AN INTERVIEW WITH MARILYN MANSON. THE CAPTIONS BEFORE THE INTERVIEW WITH MARILYN WERE HOW THE MEDIA AND OTHERS DECIDED THAT ONE OF THE MAIN CAUSES OF THE COLUMBINE SHOOTING HAD TO DEAL WITH MARILYN MANSON AND THE TYPE OF MUSIC HE SINGS AND THE LYRICS TO THOSE SONGS. THEY WERE ALL LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO BLAME FOR THE SHOOTING THE BOYS DID. IN EVERY NEWS SHOW THAT MOORE SHOWED IN A SEQUENCE OF CLIPS ALL HAD TO SAY THAT MARILYN HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE SHOOTING AT COLUMBINE. WHILE MOORE WAS INTERVIEWING MANSON, THERE WASN'T ANY MUSIC IN THE BACKGROUND, WHICH I FEEL WAS GOOD TO HIS PART. HE SHOWED THAT HE WAS A CIVIL PERSON WHO IS JUST IN THE INDUSTRY OF MAKING MONEY. MOORE DIDN'T USE ANY TYPE OF SYNCHRONOUS BY PLAYING HIS MUSIC IN THE BACK GROUND WHILE DURING THE INTERVIEW. HE DIDN'T PERSONALLY TELL THE KIDS TO SHOT UP COLUMBINE HIMSELF. HOWEVER HE ASKED HOW MANSON FELT ABOUT THE BLAME BEING ON MOSTLY ON HIM, HE REPLIED WITH A STATEMENT ABOUT HOW IF YOU "KEEP EVERYONE AFRAID, THEY WILL CONSUME." MEANING THEY WILL CONSUME GUNS TO "PROTECT" THEMSELVES FROM EVERYONE ELSE. AT THE END OF THE INTERVIEW MOORE ASKS MANSON WHAT HE THINKS SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE, OR WHY ERIC AND HIS FRIEND DID THIS. HE REPLIED WITH "LISTEN TO THEM, NO ONE DID." THIS HELPS OUT WITH PATHOS, BECAUSE THIS SHOWS MARILYN MAKES MUSIC FOR PEOPLE TO LISTEN TO HIM, AND ESCAPE FROM ORDINARY

The author of The Columbine Legacy Rampage Shootings as Political Acts has stated numerous purposes within this article. The first purpose of it was to explain about the events of Columbine and attempt to show the reader how this has created a large impact resulting in more wide spread school shootings taking place. With this the author tries to convey to the reader particular characteristics that differentiate a school rampage shooting from a wide range of other school related incidents where violence was a factor. The author also attempts to show the reader types of school related shootings that have taken place before Columbine happened and even specific events which would have led to a shooting but were uncovered before it escalated that…

On April 20th, 1999, a school shooting took place in the Columbine High School. Two students, fully armed with a variety of firearms, murdered numerous students. This catastrophe resulted in numerous disputes over the issues with gun control laws in relation to the Second Amendment of the US Bill of Rights, which gave US residents the right to bear arms. Later in 2002, Michael Moore explored the causes of the Columbine shooting and such violence in his documentary Bowling for Columbine. In this documentary, Moore uses logos, pathos, and ethos to convey the message that US social media, along with the freedom to bear guns, plays a major role…

The idea of a documentary being an artistic or even personalised expression of a director is long gone, or so it seems in recent times. In Michael Moore’s latest documentary, Bowling for Columbine, he attempts to get across to viewers his, and essentially only his point of view, on the topic of gun laws. Although what Moore is trying to say is not necessarily wrong, he is at the same time not taking into account the other side of the argument either; all he is trying to do, essentially is hypnotise viewers into thinking his way of thinking is the only way of thinking. In his documentary, it seems that all other arguments are simply invalid.…

The Academy Award winning documentary film “Bowling for Columbine” by Director Michael Moore attempts to find a reason for the Columbine High School, Colorado shootings and leads to an investigation into gun laws and gun violence. Through a series of interviews, stunts, cartoons, commentary and media pieces, we are left at the end of a blunt and revealing journey wanting the answers to the various moral and ethical questions raised. Moore travels across America and Canada to get a broad pool of opinion and not only takes the trip to find a reason for the gun violence in the first place, but he takes the long road by not blaming the usual suspects (video games, angry music, and a bloody history as a nation) and investigating other investigations. Moore reveals disturbing and frightening truths about the US’s gun possession statistics and gun related death figures. Moore shows his skill as a filmmaker in “Columbine” in his ability to keep the audience, not only attentive, but entertained also. Although the film is based around the tragic Columbine Massacre, Moore makes the best of a bad situation and tries (when appropriate) to make the film humorous and light hearted.…

Gun culture displayed by media seems to be one of the most important causes for those shootings. As a journalist mentions, “Considering countless gun movies and video games in our daily life, how could we forget violence”. Somehow, violent movies could either remind us of the bloody cruelty or lead us to violence; it depends on how we display brutality. Unfortunately, perhaps the media chooses a wrong way. As soon as we compare the advertisements of Kill Bill and that of Schindler's list, we could know movie makers’ attitudes on violence. Advertisements for action movies seem to be more appealing, which leads to a situation where…

I have heard of Mr. Michael Moore doing controversial films on events in America, such as “Fahrenheit 9/11”. After “Fahrenheit 9/11” I had not follow Mr. Michael Moore. Since the movie “Sicko” that Professor Irene Zola showed during class on Friday, February 28th, 2014 I check to see what else Mr. Moore was doing. It seems Mr. Michael Moore has been very busy as more than a filmmaker but as an activist with the type of films he makes.…

Violence is inevitable. Some of the greatest psychological researchers have stated that the human mind is driven by the desire for sex and violence. The well-known book, Lord of the flies by William Golding, as well as many twentieth century movies, is based on this concept. In his article, Gopnik analyzes mass massacres in other countries and compares them to those of the United States. Although the other countries look down on the United States, they do not take the time to compare their past killers to those in the U.S. As Gopnik states, “Every nation has violent loners, and they tend to have remarkably similar profiles from one country and culture to the next.” This statement simply means that our culture has nothing to do with the violence we hear about all over the news. Part of the blame lies further than the shooting games and action movies our kids watch on television, it lies on the government. The government has the power to create new laws in order to protect its citizens. The United States government however, has not taken necessary measures to minimize these types of massacres. While other countries take great actions after unfortunate…

America is widely known for having a fascination with violence and is a “gun – happy” country. However, this love for firearms has led to tragedies untold and horrifying truths about the mental state of individuals as revealed in the Columbine School shooting incident. Major and minor causes collectively led up to this event and bring up the question of whether or not this tragedy could have been prevented. The NRA play a key part in the debate over gun control, and parents play a vital role in instilling future generations with respect for handguns and being involved in their lives. Though there is room to consider a grey area guns continue to be the instruments used to sow sorrow resulting…

There has been an increase in mass shootings in the United States over the past 10 years. AJ Willingham states that the United States is accountable for 31% of all public mass shootings which is the largest percentage of mass shootings in the world. This is happening because there are no laws restricting the use of guns in any way, shape, or form. The government says they are going to change things and make stricter laws, but time and time again there is another shooting and still nothing comes from the government’s side of things. No one feels safe to go outside at night in their neighborhoods or safe to go to that one side of town that everyone knows is trouble. America is supposed to be the land of the free, but being in constant fear of being a victim in a mass shooting is not…

    Gun Violence In America

    • 2402 Words
    • 10 Pages

Gun violence can occur at any time and be committed by anyone, which makes it a very random, albeit common, occurrence. While gun violence can target single persons, mass shootings have become a recent phenomenon and one that strikes fear in to the hearts of millions. According to James Alan Fox and Monica J. DeLateur, there are five main causes of gun violence, and specifically mass shootings, including: revenge, power, loyalty, terror, and profit (127). Typically, it is a combination of two or more of the above reasons that lead to gun violence. However, according to Fox and DeLateur, “Among these types, revenge motivation is, by far, the most commonplace. Mass murderers often see themselves as victims – victims of injustice. They seek payback for what they perceive to be unfair treatment by targeting those they hold responsible for their misfortunes. Most often, the ones to be punished are family members or coworkers” (127). This adds a lot of context to why gun violence is so commonplace in America. Revenge is a feeling felt by many people at one point or another, but in America, taking those feelings of revenge to the extreme is possible due to the availability of guns and ammunition. Now, instead of just one or two people being murdered by the hands of a firearm, Americans are dying in record numbers due to mass shootings. Part of this is due to the above five reasons for gun violence, but part of it is also due in part to the availability of firearms that are seemingly made for more than just personal defense. Semi-automatic assault rifles are stocked on shelves nationwide in a number of stores. The right to bear arms is quickly turning in to an opportunity to kill based on raw emotion and it has become a major problem for America. Now that some of the causes of gun violence…
