Boy at the Window
It is interesting when we are young and what are our thoughts. We see things differently when we are young. We can get away with being naïve to the world. Reading “Boy at the Window” there is a sense of being young and not knowing about the world. It is difficult to understand how people think if you do not know about their lifestyle. This story explains how someone feels about another person.
Reading poetry is something to truly experience. Authors write poems with strong feelings. “Saying that poetry is built into our life experience is another way of saying that human experiences are more complex than they seem.”(Clugston) It is interesting that in just a few lines, there is someone’s life experience for interpretation. Human experience is complex to learn in a short time, but through poem there is a rhythm to it. It is easier to learn about life experience through poem, because there is feeling. My feeling from reading this poem is feeling for the boy and the snowman. They may or may not know each other but there is a strong bond. When reading a story, it is straight forward with a clear conclusion. Poems can be interpreted differently. Choosing this poem was a great way to learn about how a poem is structured and not focus on one aspect. Richard Wilbur wrote this poem from experience. This was an experience that he saw from his son’s eyes.
The story has a deep tone and it is very dark. “In dusk and cold is more than he can bear” (Wilbur). Wilbur is using two key works in this line, “dusk “and “cold”. With a deep tone, it sets the reader for a dark and negative experience. This boy sees a snowman standing out in the cold and cannot be sheltered. “The small boy weeps to hear the wind prepare” (Wilbur). The boy is upset that he cannot help the snowman. The wind is blowing hard and is very strong. These are strong images for a young boy to see. He may have built the snowman and he has a bond with it. This strong wind may destroy it and there is nothing the

    Poetry is not something that I would normally be interested in. I’ve tried writing poetry only to end up a dismal failure. I’ve tried to read poetry only to end up bored halfway through. I’ve always wanted to be one of those soulful poetic types who walk around with a serene look on their faces, snapping their fingers when something tickles their fancy but I’ve never quite made that transition.     The structure in this poem gives us a feeling of the old man’s desperation to dig up another story first portraying his uncomfort, “The man rubs his chin, scratches his ear.” His anxiousness escalates, “soon, he thinks, the boy will give up on his father.” You see his attitude further rise when he says, “he sees the day this boy will go.     Unsurprisingly, Winter Birds does not draw emotions from the reader, nor does it evoke such. Throughout the book, events take place, but are never really thought about or dissected. This gives the novel neither a sense of coldness, nor melodrama, but a believability that coincides with realism itself. In the novel, when pivotal moments take place, they are described as if they were on a list; with no inflection and dull expression. This can be seen when Danny bites his tongue open after running to defend his mother in a heated argument with his father, but fails to notice a tree root on the dark ground: “You felt the fall when it began and knew perfectly what it was. You saw the ground burst toward you…” (Grimsley, 47). When emotion is not used in a novel, the reader must decide for themselves what feeling should go with the novel, thus making it more relatable.     Weather is one of the accounts used to set the mood of the story. A Sense of Shelter opens up with a detailed account of the weather. The narrator sets the scene with bad weather. Opening with detailed descriptions of snow, thirty-two degrees temperatures, and a winter setting, readers can predict that this bad weather symbolizes something depressing and that the story will not be too uplifting. The bad weather, in this case, stands for the sullen tone that the author tries to convey. The snow in this story also can represent a clean slate or a fresh beginning, which, unlike what was stated above, is not necessarily bad. Just as the snow provides a blank canvas, the main character is getting an opportunity to have a new start by broadening his horizons outside of his familiar comfort zone through the confession of a long-lasting love and by eventually removing himself from the high school environment he had grown so accustomed to.     Poetry is considered to be a representational text in which one explores ideas by using symbols. Poetry can be interpreted many different ways and is even harder to interpret when the original author has come and gone. Poetry is an incredible form of literature because the way it has the ability to use the reader as part of its own power. In other words, poetry uses the feelings and past experiences of the reader to interpret things differently from one to another, sometimes not even by choice of the author. Two famous poets come to mind to anybody who has ever been in an English class, Robert Frost and E.E. Cummings. Both of these poets have had numerous famous pieces due to the fact that they both captivate the readers attention and can even keep them intrigued in a piece long after their first time reading it. A line such as one of the most memorable lines from Robert Frost, “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood” (1).
