How can two best friends simultaneously be enemies? John Boyne answers this question in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. He writes a tale about a Nazi commandant’s son who befriends another boy. They soon become best friends. Everyday Bruno the commandant’s son, visits Shmuel, a concentration camp inmate. Since Bruno’s father works for Hitler and Shmuel and his family are trapped by Hitler, this makes things difficult on the boys. Instead of being able to play with each other, like Bruno wants, they are separated by a fence. Bruno and Shmuel have these secret meetings every day and Bruno’s mother is also having secret meetings. However, her meetings are with the young lieutenant who works for Hitler. Although this is not clearly stated in the book, one can infer that she is having an affair with the man. Eventually, the commandant sends the lieutenant away. After a while of visiting each other Bruno learns that he is moving. As a last adventure, the two devise a plan that involves Bruno crossing the fence. When Bruno finally crosses, a herd of Nazi army officials rush a group of Jews and Bruno into an air tight room. He is only nine-years-old so he is clueless about the…

The main themes of the movie that stand out the most but are certainly not limited to is, innocent and complicity. Though he attends school and his father is a high ranking Nazi official, Bruno is mostly ignorant of the political situation at the time. When Bruno leaves Berlin he wonders why he left to be near the camp full of people in striped pajamas. Another example is the fact that he has no idea what is going on in the camp or Germany and also thinks Shmuel lives in the concentration camp with his family. That is abruptly changed when he actually goes inside to look for Shmuel’s father and realizes its not like the video about the camps. Even though Bruno’s mother is not thrilled at her husband’s job, she does not actively fight his decision to move the family. Through her not protesting and like many Germans, they complied with, did not interfere or think about the harsh realities of what the Nazis are doing. Also Bruno, Gretel or the mother doesn’t do anything when Kotler beats Pavel to death, they continue to eat through…

The children’s perspective in To Kill a Mockingbird and The Boy in Striped Pajamas reflect a tone of innocence and ignorance about the mayor problems in their small communities, but due to the conflicts in their societies they change their perspectives and become conscious of the existing problems. First person point of view gives a clear and very different view of the conflict, which they are part of without knowing, because they don’t see the conflict, they move around freely without prejudging who they hang out with. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout, the narrator, is an eight year old girl living in a small town where black people work for white and for her that is normal. In The Boy in Striped Pajamas, the story is seen through the eyes of Bruno, son of a German General during World War II, living next to a concentration camp and befriends a Jewish boy. Innocence is shown throughout the story in the children who narrate because they are blinded by their parents and teachers, who hide from them all the discrimination and unfairness around them. This is shown in To Kill a Mockingbird, when ironically the teacher says they don’t prejudge anybody in their community: “We are a democracy and Germany is a dictatorship”… “Over here we don’t believe in prosecuting anybody. Prosecution comes from people who are prejudiced…” (Lee 245). In To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout is described as an innocent girl at the beginning, but she is eventually exposed to the conflict that surrounds her due to her dad’s profession as a lawyer, who defends a black man and gets judged by society. On the other hand, in The Boy in Striped Pajamas, Bruno is completely childlike throughout the whole story, not realizing what his dad does, the difference is that he realizes there is something wrong in his community unfortunately too late for him, because he is killed ironically by his own dad. The fact that the two stories are in small communities really emphasizes the conflict…

The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss is a great book for children when they have nothing better to do, or they just want to read. This book keeps young readers engaged by the countless rhymes and surprises that are thrown into the book. Yet, it is more than just a children's book. It contains important themes for young readers to understand. In fact, it shares several themes with another well-known children's novel, William Golding's Lord of the Flies. One theme that the two have in common is that when adult supervision is absent, children's figurative and literal "beasts" come out.…

Princess and the pea didn’t have a bipolar for a stepfather. Can you see it? Her in her royal pink nightdress, awakened by the turbulence of shotgun shells atop the tile floor. A shotgun makes more of an impact than you think, but if she is pestered by a pea, I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t have survived this story. Sometimes I wonder if the tickling in my back in the morning is that shell reminding me that if it was a little more keen I probably either wouldn’t be here or writing this by the air pulses id blow into a straw like Christopher reeves. Irregardless – my stepfather is lucky his actions only resulted in a puncture wound in my king size mattress after chucking a rock at the passing car on the dirt road near my house. If I was to ask him why he decided a 12 gauge shotgun was the best solution to a neighborhood speeder, he would ask me to shut up and find the remote control. This story must be released from my memory because I can’t get over the mechanics of it.…
