In 2010 the nation was dealt the worst oil spill in the history of the USA, the BP oil rig Deep water horizon in the Gulf of Mexico. This major catastrophe destroyed some people, millions of aquatic wildlife, birds and the reputation of BP all in one fatal event. What caused this mind blowing disaster to happen? We will take a look at the ethical, negligence and environmental issues that took place to cause this situation to occur. What did the cost cutting do to BP as a company and what impact did it have in the mishap that occurred. How did BP get to the position that they found themselves in late 2006, how could the spill have been prevented and BP's reputation saved. Renting the rig from a company like Transocean was a step in the right direction, so was what happened to the rig and it’s condition prior to the accident their fault in anyway? Can they be held accountable? BP has what kind of social responsibility after the explosion and pipeline issue and what can be learned from BP in this experience. In regards to the ethical issues in this case BP should of been testing the integrity of their equipment and the safety of its use. The equipment should of been up to code by the OSHA recommendations and making money should have taken a back seat to risking employee safety. In other words the basic neglect of BP’s equipment and the faulty running of the rig that lead to the explosion is a bad mark on the reputation of BP. in June 5, of 2008 BP had a “193 barrel oil spill at its Atlantic rig, also in the Gulf of Mexico” (Jennings 2012).
