One of Roebling’s greatest implementations in the Niagara Falls Bridge was his lattice truss design. Unlike the standard lattice truss systems where the diagonal beams lie over each other, his system interlaced the diagonal beams. This provided the structure with a higher rigidity than what was previously possible using traditional methods. This design was not flawless, however, as it substantially reduced the effectiveness of the diagonals. Roebling thought this compromise was acceptable given that the bridge supports served to buttress the system. Another advantage of the diagonal iron bands is that it avoids wooden joints which are comparatively movable and reduce the resistance of the system. A horizontal giving way (buckling) of the truss level is not possible since at the final point the vertical poles take only pulling tension…
The Quebec Bridge was constructed as a mode of transportation along the St. Lawrence River. During the winter, the river is covered with a thick ice blanket, which is the only time in which trade is able to travel across the river. Additionally, without the thick ice blanket, St. Lawrence River was a barrier between east and west of Canada. The desire to bridge the St. Lawrence River was motivated by Quebec’s need to be active in trade.…

Commuters pose a challenge to town planners for various reasons, although they account for a small percentage of travelers. Commuting takes place in two faces: the morning rush hour and the afternoon rush hour. This means that during these phases, the transport system undergoes much stress because of the spike in the number of users. This can be credited to the fact that people live and work in different places and that there is a uniform work time in the country. Work starting at 8-9 a.m. and ending at 5-6 p.m., this means that commuters have some special needs and requirement in so far as traveling is concerned. So, they require speedy and dependent transportation. In addition to this, there is the growing need to keep the commuters informed…

Bridges are something that have always fascinated me. In my picture you can see I have the Julien Dubuque Bridge in the background. This bridge is a two lane bridge, it has been debated through the past years on if this bridge will be altered in the future. I think it would be a very interesting lesson for the students to look at adding lanes on the bridge. They could choose to expand the bridge into four lanes, build a second two-lane bridge, or tear down the current bridge and replace with a four-lane. During this project students would need to keep in mind that the Julien Dubuque Bridge is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. They would also have to factor in construction time and possible road detours to decide what would…
In “The Other Side of the Bridge” by Mary Lawson, the events that Arthur goes through allows him to develop into a more confident person. The first event that teaches him a lesson is when Jake falls off the bridge. Next, Arthur becomes more hardworking as a result of his father’s death. The last event that allows him to develop is when Laura comes and moves into his neighbour’s house. Throughout the novel, the life-changing events that Arthur faces had a positive impact on him, as it allowed him to grow into a stronger person- on the inside and out.…
The problem that we have is we need to find a bridge that will fill a gap that is 12" long, and 2.5" wide. Our objective is to build a bridge that can hold up to 2.5kg at the most. The bridge must have a length at least 3inches, and a width of 2.5inches.…
Have you ever crossed a bridge when driving around your city and thought about how it was constructed or how long did it take to be built or is this bridge really safe and will it ever fall down. Well, I certainly have and I know that I don’t want for a bridge to fall down whenever I am driving or walking across one. It was 6:05 pm, the rush hour in Minneapolis, Minnesota and the unimaginable at the I-35W bridge occurred. On August 1, 2007 the 1,907 foot long bridge collapsed leaving dozens of cars and trucks trapped and in the Mississippi River. The accident left 13 people dead and caused for 145 to be injured. This paper talks about the structural form of the I-35W Bridge, some circumstances that lead to the collapse, why the bridge fell…
The final scene of act one is important because Eddie loses his power to Marco who is an immigrant. In this scene it is the highest point of tension. It is the climax. This play is a tragedy and a traditional tragedy always has climax in the middle which this play has, because it has its turning point in the middle, it fits into the structure of ‘tragedy.’…

The captivating play A View From the Bridge, by Arthur Miller, portrays Eddie as the modern tragic hero. Eddie is a longshoreman who lives with his wife Beatrice and his seventeen-year old niece Catherine. Catherine the niece of Eddie and Beatrice is a beautiful and smart young lady. Eddie examines her and tells her she looks beautiful but goes on to lecture her about her new wavy walk down the…
As a result of an increased population inhabiting one area, traffic congestion is often a major issue resulting from urbanisation. In London, traffic is evidently a problem. As it would be expected from a capital city home to more than 8 million people, alongside the 30 million visitors received per year, the London road network is often under tremendous strain. Despite London’s extensive public transport facilities, many still choose to drive their own vehicles around the city. In Mumbai, the road network suffers a similar strain, unable to cope with the millions it carries each day, it suffers from increased journey times, congestion, and air pollution. In London, park and ride schemes, cycle lanes, congestion charging schemes and low emission zones have been introduced to combat the traffic. In terms of its success, an example of immediate impact was the introduction of the congestion charge, reducing the amount of traffic in the heart of the capital by about 15 per cent. However, according to TFL, the reduction has not been sustained. In Mumbai, people have tried using alternative vehicles such as mopeds and scooters, and whilst this helps them to dodge traffic jams, it has only contributed more to the poor air quality caused by emissions. Ultimately, it is clear that not all solutions are effective, but in a wealthier country like the UK, there is a much higher chance of success due to the funding fuelled into these schemes; with time, the schemes may…

Some people may claim that the third bridge will ease traffic jam. There will be aproximately 75 new route. Drivers will use this bridge instead of using other two bridges of Istanbul. Thus, the bridge will reduce traffic congestion. They may have a point in thinking like that. However, they ignore the fact that the third bridge will not solve traffic problem but, aggravate it. After the opening of the bridge, significant new traffic will be generated in northern Istanbul. There will be several trucks, cars and motorcycles. In short, a new bridge will make traffic congestion worse.…
