Perhaps more than any other agricultural product the banana reflects the colonial, neo-colonial, economic nationalism and contemporary stages of the evolution of the world economy.2 The banana was introduced to the North Americas in the late 1800’s because of the invention of the refrigerated ship.3 The influence of technology is evident even in these early stages of banana globalization. Since then, the banana has remained popular worldwide but has faced its share of problems. Between 1993-2001, there were disputes between America and the European Union (EU) due to a complex problem involving banana licensing. The stages of production, transportation and consumption all create a complex and important story to the most consumed fruit worldwide because its history intertwines with political and social trends.…

The Israel-Palestinian conflict has been a major source of communal tension amongst Arabs and Jews in the last century. Disagreements over whom the land rightfully belongs to have erupted in violence, resulting in the deaths of thousands of civilians and fighters. This fierce fighting has led to public outcry for the two factions to come to a peaceful solution that will once again bring stability to the region. Sandy Tolan, author of The Lemon Tree: An Arab, A Jew, and the Heart of the Middle East presents the conflict through the true histories of two families, antithetical in nature, whose pasts ultimately lead them down a road of friendship. Despite a few exaggerations and assumptions, Tolan presents a well-researched, impartial history…

Chiquita dramatically lost profits in the early 1990’s and while the EU’s new policies played a role in contributing to those losses they were not ultimately the cause. After eight years of solid performance Chiquita faltered in 1992, reporting a $284 million net loss. This loss was due to many factors, including but not limited to, the EU’s new policies. In the new regime the European Union enacted quotas on bananas that favored the former island colonies of European countries to the detriment of bananas originating in Central and South America, the source for most of Chiquita 's bananas. The company, which previously held 40% of the European banana market, saw its sales in Europe cut in half. Bananas that were turned away from Europe then flooded the U.S. market, driving prices down and delivering another blow to Chiquita. The framework agreement signed by four Latin American countries still lowered the quantity of Chiquita’s banana imports to the EU.…

    c) There is a low threat of new entrants in the banana industry because the banana industry is control by three major companies that control 60% of the industry. Not only is the industry controlled by these companies, but it is also an industry that has a high risk involved. With shipping produce from one country to another, the importer has to deal with the possibility of the product spoiling before it reaches the consumer. Another thing that people importing food have to deal with is the FDA regulations. The FDA can completely refuse a shipment based on the product not meeting the food inspection standards or is contaminated with something that will effect the US agriculture. One final reason there is a low threat of new entrants in this industry is from the relationships that supermarkets form with the preferred venders in order to insure the quality and supply needed for their stores, and breaking into market as a new company would be hard to create those relationships need to survive in the industry.…

Agriculture and agricultural output are very important to the Ugandan economy. The agricultural industry is the largest employer of Ugandan's with 75% of the population earning a living from the industry. Food and agricultural raw materials account for 40% of the total exports from Uganda. Additionally, the sector contributes 22.7% to the Ugandan GDP. The large contribution of agricultural products to the Ugandan economy has led the government to promote value addition as a means of increasing the value of exports. According to the Ugandan Investment Authority (UIA), the demand for Uganda’s organic products is higher than the supply. This imbalance presents a high opportunity for export of organic fruit juice from Uganda. Fruits and farm produce are wasted or sold at very low prices during peak seasons due to inadequate storage facilities and lack of effective processing or preservation techniques, leading to high wastage levels. Juice production not only serves to add value to agricultural export but also serve as a way to prevent wastage of excess fruits. The juice industry has an opportunity to contribute to the Ugandan economy by increasing the value of the country’s exports and simultaneously preventing wastage of fruits so high in demand, and creating jobs for Ugandans.…
