Breaking Night
When life changes

Liz Murray had a rough life but overcame many obstacles to better herself. She went through being poor and living in poverty, watching her parent’s abuse drugs and wanting a better life. Liz was a very determined girl and knew she would someday succeed. She was very mature young in which she had to be. Most young kids can’t take care of themselves yet alone their parents but she had the drive and motivation for this task. Going through all the hardships and staying positive is remarkable in the situations she was put in.
Liz grew up in a very poor family. Her parents were very deep into drugs. She would rarely have food and as a kid that must be tough. Her parents would never have money for food and they would always eat the same thing over and over. Liz did not have water so since she did not shower she would be dirty. She would go to school dirty and filthy. In the book Breaking Night she explains that while all the other kids would get new clothes, haircut or new shoes for school that she would be wearing the same clothes over and over. For any kid that age especially when they see other kids with the nice new flashy outfits or a neat pair of shoes it makes them sad. She understood that her parents were poor and seemed okay with this.
Liz would know exactly when her parents would be doing drugs. She would drawer open and see the utensils that her mom and dad used the drugs with. Seeing this at any age would be traumatizing. Growing up knowing that your parents are addicted to drugs having to always wonder in the back of your mind if they will live another day is rough. Liz would wait for them when one of them would go on their late night drug hunt or when they would go to the bar. Although her sister did not agree, Liz was the watch dog for her parents. They would be harming their bodies throughout the drug use but Liz was like a guardian overlooking them. Having to grow up watching over your parents who were on a fast road to death
