Peekay is raised by his Zulu nanny Mary Mandoma and his grandpa on a farm after his mother had a nervous breakdown. Peekay is sent to Afrikaans boarding school where he was bullied for being the only English speaker as well as the youngest of the students. A bully called The Judge and his “stormtroopers” bully Peekay especially because of his bedwetting problems as well as his circumcised penis. Peekay returns home after his first year. There his aunt treats his bedwetting problem. Peekay returns to school the next year with his problem solved and grandpa chook a magic chicken and with an independent spirit he calls “the power of one”. Grandpa chook becomes his only friend at school and Mevrou lets him stay because he keeps the cockroaches away. Peekay started doing very well in school but he soon realized he had to keep a “camouflage” in order to stay under the radar. but he realized by doing all of the judges homework he was actually getting smarter. But, the judge still hates him just as much. By the end of the he makes him eat human feces and also killed grandpa chook. This makes Peekay eager to go home. However, he is taken to eastern Transylvania where Peekay meets a man named Harry Crowne the man who dubs him with the name “PK”. On the train to Barberton, Peekay meets Hoppie Groenewald, boxing champion of the railways. Hoppie shows Peekay his boxing gloves, and invites the boy to watch him box a man called Jackhammer Smit in Gravelotte, a stop on the way to Barberton. Peekay 's dream to become welterweight champion of the world is born. He commits Hoppie 's advice-"First with the head, then with the heart"-to memory. At the Barberton train station, Peekay 's mother welcomes him-she has returned from the mental institution, and has become a born-again Christian.
