They can come together and make, change, or abolish rules as they see fit. people that enforce these laws.
They inform member of a given community how to obey laws and stop the people who ignore the law and do as they please. By breaking rules and laws, an individual opens themselves up to possible consequences for their actions, a consequence being something that occurs due to something else. Rules and laws have many purposes. They help people share resources. They help people get along with one another. Most importantly, they help keep people in communities safe. a reason and they help the members of a given community maintain a safe and enjoyable lifestyle for themselves and others around them.
Baldwin 2
To live and function is a society, there must we rules that people mostly agree upon.
There are informal rules, or ones like those we have at home or in the classroom and there are formal rules, such as laws in a society (Wonders 1). Informal rules are largely unspoken and enforced by disappointment, time-out, frustration, etc. Formal rules though have been determined important enough be written down and codified. For example, a student raises his hand to ask a question in class. This is probably because the instructor has set an informal rule stating that is what you are supposed to do when you have an inquiry. If everyone could simply talk at any point they wanted during a class session, nothing would get accomplished. Same goes with getting up out of your seat in an elementary school setting. Children would be running amuck all day in class. As opposed to an organized, efficient, and studious classroom it would be chaos. These small informal rules create order out of the chaos, but breaking them does not mean you going to jail. They are simply norms of conduct that can be taken from past traditions and habits.
Then, there are formal rules that are a fixed set of organized procedures and actions that must be strictly adhered to (Wonder 1). These are rules set by society and typically enforced by the police. They are codified in writing and apply to every member of a community or group.
Formal rules could also be labeled as laws, since they are codified. Breaking them can result in serious consequences such as jail time or fines paid to the government of the community. For example, a person is learning to drive their automobile. There are many formal rule that apply to this action such as a speed limits. You cannot drive as quickly as you want at any time and that is made known to everyone. There is a correct side of the road to drive on, correct ways to park on side streets, etc. The common goal of these rules is to jointly keep you and the people around
Baldwin 3 you safe (Wonders 1). If the speed limit is broken by a large percentage, a hefty fine as well as possible jail time may be the consequence for breaking the formal rules (law) of the speed limit.
Kevin Pauley explains the differences in the two types of rules as follows in his 2016 article titled “What are the differences between formal and informal social norms?”.
The difference does not stem from the feelings of the members of the society, but in the perceived potential consequences. A person who ignores a society’s informal rules may not go to prison, but he may become completely useless nevertheless because no one will have anything to do with him.
There are, in fact, possible issues with informal rules. They may risky and dangerous to break
(Pauley 1). A person who breaks a formal rule may go to jail. After serving the allotted sentence they are welcomed back into society to hopefully continue the social norms. But a person who breaks informal rules may experience less dramatic consequences that may last an entire life, not just the length of a jail sentence. Informal rules are typically unspoken so people who are not aware of them can break them without ever knowing. Once they break one, they may break another rule directly following it. Taking another quote from Kevin Pauley, this phrase could be uttered to outsiders; “Why couldn’t you see that? Why wouldn’t you just know that? It’s just
common
sense!”
The rule of law is the four universal principles that were developed according to common social norms that are widely accepted. Experts around the world have influenced the principles and tested them to find the most accurate definition. Below are the four principles that make up the rule of law. They were taken from the World Justice Project.
1. The government and its officials and agents as well as individuals and private entities are accountable under the law.
Baldwin 4
2. The laws are clear, publicized, stable, and just; are applied evenly; and protect fundamental rights, including the security of persons and property and certain core human rights.
3. The process by which the laws are enacted, administered, and enforced is accessible, fair, and efficient.
4. Justice is delivered timely by competent, ethical, and independent representatives and neutrals who are of sufficient number, have adequate resources, and reflect the makeup of the communities they serve.
The rule of law is the legal principle stating that nations, communities, and societies alike should be governed by the decisions of elected officials. It means the government of law, not men.
Communities have rules for a reason as depicted by this paper. They help to shape society to a certain point where these rules are understood and acknowledged without question.
Whether informal or formal, people tend to abide by the rules. It helps to keep groups of people around the world in-line and acting correctly. If rules were not in place there would be total chaos and no organization. With them, there can be organization from the chaos! Rules and laws have many purposes. They help people share resources. They help people get along with one another. Most importantly, they help keep people in communities safe. This paper explained the definition of a rule and a law as well as reasons why communities have them. It also described the difference between types of rules, formal and informal. Then, the rule of law was explained and listed to give readers a clear definition of this social principle. Rules are inherently important in communities, societies, groups, etc. In conclusion, set guidelines for communities are in place for a reason and they help the members of a given community maintain a safe and enjoyable lifestyle for themselves and others around them.
