I. Title

Water Diuresis in Man

II. Introduction

There are four ways on how substances usually exit our body: first, through the excretion of feces; second, through breathing; third, through sweating; and lastly, through urinating. However, urine is a very good indicator on how things work in the one’s body. The amount of urine output is one of the many things that have to be considered in examining the health of a person. In this experiment, the researchers would want to know the effects of exercise, salty foods, and water in the urine output of a person.

III. Objectives

• To determine the effect of sodium chloride on the urine output of man

• To distinguish the influence of exercise on the urine output of man

IV. Materials

➢ Saline solution or kyamoy

➢ Urine sample

V. Procedure

1. Selection and preparation of subjects

Students will work in groups of 3: one to consume saline solution or kyamoy

one to consume water

one to consume water and exercise

The group should select and assign the conditions they are to work with, a meeting before the actual day of the experiment. Each one should take note of his/her weight because the amount of fluid to be consumed should be equivalent to 1% of the weight. For example, if the weight of the subject is 40 kgs- 1% of 40 kgs is 0.4 kg of fluid or 0.4 liter of fluid since 1 kg is equal to 1 liter.

Strictly follow these rules before the performance of the experiments;

a. Have only a light breakfast or lunch before hand

b. Do not drink tea, coffee, or soft drinks, or alcoholic drinks

2. Experimentation

a. The subjects must empty the bladder an hour before coming to class. Record the time.

b. Immediately before drinking the fluid provided for: the subject must empty his bladder again. Record the time.

c. For the next two hours, the subject regularly empties the bladder at 20 minutes intervals. Between times, he remains comfortably seated.

For the subject assigned to exercise after water intake:

He/she will perform an exercise that involves considerable effort but does not cause profuse sweating for 15 minutes. This is to be done between 20-40 minutes after drinking the water.

d. Record your data collection. Include in the data the sex of the subjects.

e. Collation of all the class result should be done so that the class can see the range of results.

VI. Results and Discussions

After the long discussions that the researchers had, they finally reached the conclusion of this experiment. Based on the result provided in the table, they believed that salty food such as sodium chloride, kyamoy, etc. can decrease the urine output of a man. This is scientifically proven. For example, if a man has Urinary Tract Infection (U.T.I.), which is caused by eating too much salty foods, he has a difficulty in urinating. Meanwhile, if someone does nothing after drinking water, his urine output can increase. This is because more fluid is consumed after not doing anything, so the real tendency is to increase the urine output. On the other hand, a man who drank water and exercised after doing so would have a decreased urine output for almost an hour, the urine output would increase after an hour.
