Introduction
Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts in the cells of the breast. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that can grow into surrounding tissues or spread to distant areas of the …show more content…
body.
The disease occurs almost entirely in women; however, men can get it too.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among
American women, except for skin cancers. About 1 in 8 (12%) women in the US will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer. The chance that breast cancer will be responsible for a woman’s death is about 1 in 36 (about 3%). Death rates from breast cancer have been declining since about 1989, with larger decreases in women younger than 50. These decreases are believed to be the result of earlier detection through screening and increased awareness, as well as improved treatment.
The goal of screening exams for breast cancer is to find cancers before they start to cause symptoms (like a lump that can be felt).

a disease, such as cancer, in people who do not have any symptoms.
Early detection means using an approach that lets breast cancer get diagnosed earlier than otherwise might have occurred.
Most doctors feel that early detection tests for breast cancer save thousands of lives each year, and that many more lives could be saved if even more women and their health care providers took advantage of these tests.
Following the American Cancer Society’s guidelines for the early detection of breast cancer improves the chances that breast cancer can be diagnosed at an early stage and treated successfully. The American Cancer Society guidelines for early detection of breast cancer consist of a combination of regular clinical breast examination (CBE) and counseling to raise awareness of breast cancer symptoms for women beginning in their 20s and annual
mammography beginning at age 40. At the moment, the ACS cancer screening guidelines for the early detection of breast cancer are currently being updated.
Our FBLA Chapter decided that for our Community Service Project that we would promote breast cancer awareness by hosting a breast cancer walk in the community. Although breast cancer doesn’t affect our age group as much, we understand the importance of making sure those who may contract breast cancer should be aware.
Purpose of Project
Statement of Project Goals
The Ringgold FBLA Chapter chose The Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign for our main community service project for 20142015 school years. The main goals of the project are:
● To ignite interest in the study and research of inflammatory breast cancer at every level.
● To support research, the purpose of which is to reach an unambiguous definition of breast cancer. ● To increase awareness of breast cancer for primary care physicians, nursing professionals, and medical technicians in order to minimize the time from presentation of symptoms to correct diagnosis of inflammatory breast cancer.
● To increase public awareness in an effort to encourage women to seek medical attention for common inflammatory breast cancer symptoms soon after they appear.
● To empower patients, caregivers, families and friends to pursue meaningful paths in support of diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory breast cancer.
Service to the Community and its Citizen
The Breast Cancer Awareness project served the community and its citizens in several ways. The
Ringgold FBLA Chapter wanted to make sure that everyone would get informed about the th importance of detecting and learning about breast cancer that took place on October 4 2014.
The following community entities and citizens were the main objective of the Ringgold FBLA
Chapter’s service project:
● All grade levels in the Ringgold area
● Students and chapters in Bienville Parish
● Our community as a whole
In an effort to contribute to the existing community as members we decided to hand out a breast cancer awareness information pamphlet. The pamphlet contained information and tips on how to find an early detection on your own. The pamphlet also described the steps to take if you find a sign and may think you have breast cancer. Singer Sheryl Crow once said about her breast cancer fight. “The only person who can save you is you: That was going to be the thing that informed the rest of my life.”
Planning and Development of
Project
Planning and Development of Project In the previous year our FBLA Chapter did not participate in the Community Service Project, so this year we decided to take a swing at it. The chapter members debated long and hard over what our project would be, until we came to the agreement. Since Breast Cancer Awareness Month was coming up shortly, it was the perfect chance to inform people about breast cancer, so we decided that we would construct Breast Cancer Awareness Walk.
The planning of this project started in the beginning of August. We assumed that most of our community knew and/or has had a family member that has had breast cancer due to many people in our community being related. However, we felt like many individuals in our community didn’t know enough about breast cancer. Research was completed to gather information on breast cancer to provide correct facts to present to them. Over the next few months, the chapter worked on gathering and organizing the information that would be passed out to the Ringgold community. During the first committee meeting my advisor delegated two members’ head of the community service project. At the next meeting we decided what we would have to do in order to get the word out that we were hosting a breast cancer walk. This following is an outline of
what we had planned:
● August o Held a meeting at Ringgold High School o Held a voting session to see who was interested in working on the community service project
● September o Counted the votes and appointed the two members that will be working on
the community service project o Started gathering information about the breast cancer o Began processing the breast cancer pamphlets
● October o Distribute informational brochures o Contact Channel 12 News to broadcast that we were hosting a breast cancer walk o Sent out additional letters to remind people about the breast cancer walk.
Implementations
Implementation
The first way of implementing the project began in the early part of the school year. The Breast
Cancer Awareness Project began when we started gathering information about our Chapter
Breast Cancer Walk. We wanted people to know the importance of early screening and what to do. The steps to implement this project were as follows:
●
●
●
●
●
Conduct a breast cancer survey
Analyze survey results
Produce an informative brochure
Send out informational brochure
Sent out advertisements to get mammograms
Conducting a breast cancer survey
. A 2013 Count Us global survey found that women with advanced breast cancer wish they had more time to discuss their needs during doctor's visits.
While you can't always control the amount of time you have, it's important to make that time count. In 2014, a survey was conducted of 359 women living with advanced breast cancer, 252 oncologists and 234 caregivers to better understand how they can help you work with your care team and loved ones to improve communications. Analyze survey results.
After the surveys were returned and completed the results were looked at to decide what information the average man and woman needed to know and what information the average person already knew about breast cancer. Create an informative brochure.
We passed out brochures to inform people about breast cancer. It had details about the different stages of breast cancer and early detection of it whether it is done by you or by a doctor. The brochure also had facts about the men and women who suffer and how they could be put at risk. Sent out advertisements to get mammograms.
We believed that advertisements about mammograms would be beneficial to many people. Mammograms could help a person find out if they have breast cancer. An early detection could possibly save a life.
Impact and Benefits to the
Community
The Impact and Benefits
The impact of the chapter’s community service project was felt by many people in the Bienville
Parish community. The Breast Cancer Awareness pamphlets were beneficial to a large amount of citizens throughout our community.
Our Breast Cancer Awareness project impacted our community in many different ways.
Members of our community were able to gain information about breast cancer and screenings as well as what do when told by physicians that you have breast cancer. Most of the citizens of our community were interested in learning more about breast cancer and how to show their support to loved ones who has breast cancer.
Not only did out project impact the parents and siblings of our school’s students, it also affected the students. Our informational pamphlets impacted our students by sparking their curiosity and support for breast cancer. Students were coming to us as they turned in their surveys amazed at what they had found out.
Evidence of Publicity
Our chapter did not receive any publicity for this community service project. Most news and media outlets are not within out community. However, we tried to contact KSLA news, but failed to reach them. Although we will support our claims that we tried with attached evidence of the letter we issued out to them.
Getting attention to such a small town is very difficult. We are happy that the ones that we reached came out and supported the fight for breast cancer.
