quarrel gets increasingly more violent each time these two get in a fight. Due to the abuse, Pecola always ponders why is her family so ugly on the inside and the outside. “ As long as she looked the way she did, as long she was ugly, she would have to stay with these people, somehow she belonged to them.” This shows that Pecola always wondered why she belonged in this family, knowing she was ugly like them in the sense that she is ugly on the outside but not on the inside. Mrs.Breedlove is the main person who abuses Pecola for little reasons instead of comforting her, which leads to Mrs.Breedlove becoming the main threat towards Pecola.
Mrs.Breedlove is parent who would mistreat her child instead of comforting them.
During her childhood, Mrs.Breedlove never has felt any positive emotions from her two parents. Since this is the case, Mrs.Breedlove has nothing to prepare for parenthood. Most of the time, she would just beat her daughter, Pecola for any mistake that she makes.Mrs.Breedlove also takes care of a white child who calls her by the name “Polly.” Mrs. Breedlove treats this child better than her own.“Mrs.Breedlove entered with a tightly packed laundry bag. In one gallop she was on Pecola, and with the back of her hand knocked her to the floor. Pecola slid in the pie juice, one leg folding under her. Mrs. Breedlove yanked her up by the arm, slapped her again.” Mrs.Breedlove is relentless whenever it is time to beat her children, especially Pecola due to the fact that she can’t do anything to fight against it. Cholly and Pecola were both abused by the ones they love. But Cholly would both give and take abuse towards himself and his loved
ones.
Throughout life, Cholly has been abused both physically and mentally by the ones that he formed a bond with. Due to these affairs, Cholly has only learned how to be a malicious being due to the conflicts in the past. Cholly also became an alcoholic which made him even more vicious due to being under the influence of the drink. At home, he would start fights with Mrs.Breedlove which would be both violent and dangerous. “ She ran into the bedroom with a dishpan full of cold water and threw it in Cholly’s face. Naked and ashen, he leaped from the bed, and with a flying tackle, grabbed his wife around the waist, and hit the floor. Dropping onto his knee, Cholly struck her several times in the face.” Cholly would be less violent if it wasn't for the fact that he was loved by someone. But it wouldn’t matter because Mrs.Breedlove would start a fight that would lead to Cholly getting physical.
