Contemporary Realistic Fiction

The genre that I will be presenting is Contemporary Realistic Fiction. The project idea that I chose for my genre was the topic of the sensitive issue of death and how it is treated and written in literature. To discuss the issue about death and dying the paper will include books that focus on the following subjects. The first being what the understanding or impression of the child be after reading or having the books read to them. The next being how the stories treat the issue of death and what lessons they could have learned in helping them cope. Another would be the question of if the books treat the subject the same way and if not, I will compare the viewpoints amongst the books. The books will be discussed both in individual and collective form so as to provide a true and fair view of the information which are

The first being Bridge To Terabithia by Katherine Paterson, which is the story of depressed and angry fifth grader Jess Aarons, who becomes friends with his new outgoing, tomboy neighbor Leslie Burke. The two lonely children create a magical forest kingdom together that they call Terabithia. The book comes to a tragic end when Leslie falls into a creek and drowns. The lesson that I got out of reading this book was that Jesse could only overcome his grief with the strength and courage that his friendship with Leslie had given him.
The next book I chose was a picture book called Jim’s Dog Muffins by Miriam Cohen. Jim is a first grader who has been having a hard time since his dog Muffins died. At school, he becomes angry when his classmates don’t seem to understand how he feels. Until his new friend Paul comes along and helps him feel better. This could show the aspect of how having people around to help you get through a loved one’s, or in this case a loved dog’s, death is very crucial and can have very positive

I read the book what Happened to Cass McBride. It was a very good book that keeps you on your toes. What I liked most about it though was that you would never expect what happens in the end of the story. I also like that the main character who stayed strong through the whole book and it teaches people who read this, that just when you think it’s over, it’s really not. This is one of my favorite books that I have read.…

In The Rock and the River, by Kekla Magoon, “all it takes for evil to exist is for good people to do nothing” is a prominent theme. An example of this is when Bucky had just been brutally beat and arrested by the police. The police did this in broad daylight in front of everyone including Maxie and Sam. “People on the street began going about their business again. The radio blasted, covering the silence of disbelief, of resignation.” (pg. 68). This quote demonstrates the theme because it shows that if the people watching the violence happen (aka the “good people”) do nothing, then the cop’s racism (aka the evil) would continue existing.…

The book I chose was Educating Esme: Diary of a Teacher’s First Year by Esme Raji Codell. I chose this book because I honestly judged it from the title on the book review assignment page and found this to possibly be something that might help me in my journey into becoming a teacher. I found this book to very amusing and very touching. I thought that Esme's attitude and writing style was funny and easy to read and understand. One of my favorite stories in the book is the one when Esme made Billy Williams teach the class for a day because he was misbehaving. Esme threatened suspension to Billy for cursing and being disrespectful, so he accepted the punishment of teaching the class for the day instead of suspension. I thought it was great that he was able to mimic and recite specific lines that Esme used even though he didn’t always seem…

The anthropology of death is a fascinating field of study which depicts the conceptualization of death, the modes of death, and from various funerary rites/rituals that a Western society might even find repulsive or enchanting. Why is it that the most appealing form of media among kids is about superheroes overcoming adversity or death, and then the hero comes in to save the day? The answer is quite simple, because humans find death interesting. Is it due to the fact that no one lives forever? Humans know this fact of life but they still wish for this goal of cheating death. A common occurrence is through funeral and mortuary rites where there is the belief in a future life and in the survival of the spirit (Malinowski 20). Hal Duncan’s “The Tomb and the Womb: Death and Rebirth in World Myth and Mythic Fiction,” noted that "Where tales of death and re-becoming offer a holistic view of a world of ephemeral forms in flux, tales of death and resurrection offer a promise that a hero can survive, that a person of destiny can harrow death, come out the other side" (Duncan 1).The supporting point in this discussion is with respect to the belief of symbolic immortality which is a powerful vehicle discussed in Antonius C.G.M. Robben’s book “Death, Mourning, and Burial.”…

The book I chose for my book club is “The Skin I’m in”, written by Sharon G. Flake. After Sharon’s daughter was born it gave her the inspiration and dedication to write. Flake wrote short stories for her daughter, and read them at her daughter's daycare. She then wanted to write children's books with an African-American emphasis, this lead to her purpose of writing “The Skin I’m in”. The book was published in 1998 making this Sharon G. Flake debut novel. My reasoning for choosing this book was the content and environment the story is written in. It takes place in a diverse school and community, targeting younger students to love themselves the way God made them. I enjoy books that are sweet, simple, and straight to the point and this book accomplished that. It was easy to read and I can definitely recommend it to my future students to learn a valuable lesson.…

I chose the book Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder and illustrated by Garth Williams. This book was first published in 1932. I chose this book at random from my grandmother’s house over Thanksgiving. I knew that she had all of the books and my sister had used my grandmother’s collection to read them all when she was younger. I just chose the first book that I saw and I really lucked out because it looked interesting. I felt that I could not go wrong with any of the books because they are widely praised for being great reads. This was the first time that I was reading a book from the collection. I had been interested in other titles when I was younger so I never became interested in these books.…

    Dog's Death

I chose John Updike’s poem “Dog’s Death” since it grabbed my attention from a similar loss I encountered. It invoked an emotional feeling from the family’s loss and dog’s death. No one can ever understand this feeling or have these emotions unless they have been through a dog’s death or have even lost a family member. I lost my mother about two years ago from a long battle of diabetes and will always remember how it felt when I heard the news. My mother was my best friend and she will always be with me. I have also lost a dog that our family had for 10 years named Ode. She was also like a best friend and was so loyal to me in any situation that accrued.…
