INTRODUCTION
Bridgestone Group is the world’s largest tyre manufacturer, supplying quality tyres for cars, trucks, buses, construction, aircraft and motorcycles. Bridgestone is being chosen as they received a lot of award regarding sustainability as example Tire Technology Awards for Innovation and Excellence 2013. In addition, the Bridgestone Group is also involved in the Tyre Industry Project and the Sustainable Mobility Project 2.0 that are established under the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).
SUMMARY
Bridgestone is working towards a sustainable society. Their environmental mission statement is to help ensure a healthy environment for current and future generations. There are three main Bridgestone’s long-term environmental visions. The first one is in balance with nature. It is the commitment for the company to contribute to biodiversity. They will take into account the company impact on the ecosystem as a whole. The second mission statement is towards 100% sustainable materials. Bridgestone defines sustainable material as material that derived from resources with continual supply, can be used as part of the company’s business over the long term and have a low environmental and social impact across the whole life cycle from procurement to disposal. Last but not least, they want to contribute to globally-agreed target which is 50% reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.
ANALYSIS
Product design falls under second Bridgestone’s mission statement which is towards 100% sustainable materials. According to Bloch et al (1995), several studies has justified that one powerful tool for differentiation is product design. Product design is important as it can build favourable consumer associations and is also a major tool for building brand personalities and for creating characteristic product and company images (Kotler et al, 1996).
