At the age of 6 I would sing in my church choir. About 8 years later, bullying and being made fun of due to my acne and weight gain really hit me hard. Just wanting to be myself was hard enough. I made a comment about how different skin colors shouldn’t define anyone and got a ton of hatred. My wardrobe contained the total opposite of the popular girls’. Being a rebellious teen was fun. Back at home I was surrounded with a horrible community. All the memories that took place needed to be erased to follow my dreams in the music industry. About 3 years later I joined the band “Big Brother and the Holding Company,” which made a statement about my talent and made me more noticeable. My career never really took off until I joined the band. Making music was never about the money in my case. Finally, I was with a good group of guys and eventually made my way to the front and center of the band. But unfortunately I just felt like they were holding me back from being more outgoing in my musical career. About a year and a half later I had to leave the band. It was the hardest goodbye.
In 1969 I performed at Woodstock which is basically 3 days of love and rock n roll. Woodstock preaches peace and so did I. I protested against the Vietnam War wherever I went. Performing at Woodstock was my first solo effort. A couple of solos were released but they were never really big. It was hard being a solo female artist in a generation of male domination so I had to see whether or not people would accept me. My album “Pearl” was released the in 1971. Pearl was the album that made me more famous and known. My most popular song was “Me and My Bobby
