What does it really take in society to be a responsible black man? Some of them allow society to determine their worth and fall by the wayside. While there are other black men that live up to their responsibility and fight the unjust system determined to make a difference. Sometimes it seems as an uphill battle just to obtain and then maintain the basic necessities of life. The challenge of the black man in America to build a strong foundation for his manhood includes supporting his family, obtaining a job and his self-reliance. By being the head of the household it is expected that the man be able to provide for his family. Also the man is seen as the protector and superior authority figure of the house. For example: Cory’s mother didn’t mind him cleaning his room after football practice, but she told him to hurry and get it done before his father came home. (p.1298) Troy would look for any opportunity to provide for his family, such as taking care of his brother but also reaping the benefits of spending some of his disability check. Maintaining his job would ensure that he could continue to be independent and didn’t have to ask anyone for anything. Troy would often scold his son Lyons about trying to get something for nothing, and that life doesn’t owe him anything, but he owes himself.
