In the philosophical epic of Ayn Rand, entitled Atlas Shrugged, Rand allows much room for interpretation as to the meaning of the title of her work. As the reader progresses through the different stages of the book, their translation of the title and its relation to the story evolves. Through parts one and two of the book, one could interpret the title to represent two things: First, it suggests that, Francisco D'Anconia, a titan within the copper and mining industry, is Atlas. It was his strategic collapse of D'Anconia mines that seemed to shake the economy, with his rebellion creating a ripple effect that devastated the economy, as if Atlas used the rest of his strength to make the world suffer. It also, however, indicated to be in reference…

If the generation of millennials were asked to live a collectivist society like the one described in Ayn Rand’s, Anthem, I foresee that they would struggle greatly with the lack of control over their lives and with the absence of any individuality or superiority. For example, in Anthem, a person does not have any say in what they are to do in their life, for, “the Council of Vocations [comes] to give [men their] life Mandates which tell those who reach their fifteenth year what their work is to be for the rest of their days” (24). The generation of me-centric millennials would be driven insane if they were required this, especially at an age of fifteen, when the desire for independence starts to develop. Furthermore, we learn from Equality…

Ayn Rand, author of the novel Anthem, had the philosophical view of both a Romantic and a Realist. She states, "I am Romantic in the sense that I present men as they ought to be. I am a Realist in the sense that I place them here and now and on this earth." This quote implies that she portrays man in an idealistic sense, but she places her characters in a realistic world. Emigrating from the her home country of Russia into America, Rand was initially exposed to a somewhat technologically backwards society that discouraged the advancement of the individual. After settling in America, Rand found herself in a considerably more satisfying environment where a capitalist society existed in which technological and individual advancement was encouraged. This background led to Ayn Rand's opinion of technology in Anthem; through the comparison of the despair of a technologically backward society and the happiness of an individual who steps forth from the conformity of that society, Rand makes the point that technology is a positive advancement.…

Frederick Nietzsche once wrote that the “untruth, [or lie], is a condition of life.”At least in terms of creating a stable society, Socrates would seem to agree. In The Republic, Socrates points out that civilization is most prone to instability when founded on what he calls a“noble lie.”The lie which, despite its falsehood, serves for the good of society. His noble lie can be broken into two parts: a justification on why the lie applies to all of a society's members and a justification of the role each person serves in their society. Thus, if subjects believe in his noble lie, instability is abated because those who end up in the working class will be given simple reasoning for why they are where they are in society. That is to say, discontent will be diminished because the noble lie gives reasoning for why those in power are in power. The lie is noble in its attempt to achieve a greater good; however, the lie also contains truth due to the fact that, theoretically, it enables those who should be in power to be in power. The concept of the noble lie can be further expanded as its premise, a societal truth founded on a falsehood, can be applied to many different aspects of society. For instance, many people in the U.S. believe that America is a completely democratic country because that is the noble lie they are told, yet many aspects of American society, such as the disenfranchisement of felons, suggest just the opposite.…

As children living in this American society, we are often taught to “stand up for what we believe in” and to “do what makes us happy”, and then we grow up as individuals that are contributing to a collaborative society, but what would it be like to take these individual ideas to the extreme? What would happen to our society if there was not collaboration at all if we simply lived for the sake of ourselves? In the Novel “The Fountainhead” by Ayn Rand, Rand expresses her views on the power of individualism. Rand believes that in order to reach true happiness, one must be devoted to only themselves, and work to find their own happiness in the world no matter what those means are. Although this idea may sound great, there are both positive points…

    Book Review Divergent

    • 349 Words

“Divergent” is about a 16 year old girl named Beatrice or “Tris” living in the author’s dystopian Chicago. Society is divided into 5 factions, each dedicated to a different virtue. She must select the faction in which she lives the rest of her life in. It is a decision between her family and who she thinks she is. I thought it was one of the best books I have ever read. The author wrote the book very well and had very good details. This book relates to Biology by Evolution and Genetics. Divergent is considered a mutation in which a person has characteristics of all five factions and the mutation is beneficial to society but the leaders of the factions feel threatened by. In the book, The city of Chicago was used as a test to see the fittest of all the factions and who can survive in a general sense. Within all the factions, the newly chosen teenagers have to go through training to see who is the best fit and compete against each other to get in the faction. Additionally, most of the time the teenagers tend to stay in their faction they were born into. Because of the separation of the traits of each faction: Intelligence, Bravery, Peacefulness, Honesty, and Selflessness, there is a form of selection. For example if the Dauntless(brave) faction only mate with other Dauntless, they would continue to pass on the genes of bravery and there is a form of selection from isolation and eventually speciation. Something I learned from this book and found very interesting was all the testing in the teenagers brains when they trained for their factions. Divergent people have a special way of knowing that these tests of fear are only in their head and can break through the technology the leaders use against them. These tests show how dreams can feel so real and it is all in your head. It also shows the power of medicine in your body. After reading this book I want to read more Science-fiction books because I find them very interesting.…
