The story Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is taking place in a bungalow in India in the late 1800s. the characters in the story are Rikki-Tikki, a young mongoose, Teddy, a young boy, Alice, the mother, and the father, his name is unknown. Some other characters are are Nag and Nagaina, a pair of cobras, Karait a small venomous snake, Darzee and his wife, two birds, and Chuchundra, the muskrat.
In the story a young boy named Teddy, and his parents take in a half drowned mongoose that they find on the side of the road. They clean him up, and keep him as a pet. The family names him Rikki-Tikki. Rikki-Tikki begins to play out in the garden, and sleeps in Teddy’s bed. Rikki-Tikki goes off to the garden one day, and meets a sad bird couple. the birds are said because one of their babies fell out of the nest, and Nag ate it. Nag begins to scare Rikki-Tikki, as they discuss how Nag should not have eaten Darzee’s baby. while they are talking, Nagaina sneaks up behind them and prepares to strike Rikki. However, Darzee yells out to Rikki, and he moves just in time to miss Nagaina's powerful strike of death. The snakes slither away, and just as Rikki thinks he is safe, another snake slithers out of the bushes. It is Karait. After Karait tell Rikki “I am Death”, Rikki attacks him, hitting him in the back of the neck, paralyzing and killing Karait. Rikki is praised by the family for saving Teddy’s life. That night Nag and Nagaina plot to kill the family so they can have the bungalow and the garden to themselves. Nagaina leaves, and Nag stays in the bathroom. Rikki tiptoes over to Nag, and prepares to attack. Rikki sneaks up and attacks Nag, and the father runs to the bathroom with his gun, and shoots, killing Nag. The next morning, Nagaina is very upset, and is preparing to kill the entire family that lives in the bungalow. As she plots, Rikki runs to the
