In the novel “True Grit” by Charles Portis, two characters in particular have the courage, roughness, and determination you associate with the term true grit. Mattie Ross, driven by her determination to avenge the death of her father, despite her young age, recruited and partnered with a retired lawman whom many thought was guilty, yet never convicted, of lawless killings. Mattie’s courage was obvious as she continued her journey in spite of the many hardships she met including having her arm amputated after being bitten by a snake. The other character, General Rooster Cogburn, who agreed to help Mattie was physically disabled and had a serious alcohol problem, yet he was determined to do whatever he had to do to earn the money he was promised.…

It has been said that the biggest obstacle you’ll ever have to overcome is your mind and if you can overcome that you can overcome anything. This statement rings true in the novel The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore himself. The novel tells the stories of two individuals named Wes Moore who share somewhat similar backgrounds and adversity growing up, but who end up with two very different fates--one a life full of success and the other a life in prison. It is evident that the defining factors within their lives were the author Wes Moore’s mother’s strong presence and guidance, and it is his growth mindset that encourages him to improve; whereas, the other Wes Moore views his brother as his only role model, his father is…

A good man; bad man and a split figure of public opinion. Ned was a voice for the people although went about his message the completely wrong way by damaging the power of authority and making them look like chumps. Ned Kelly is known now as the hero of the bush Australian outback although his crimes even now would still be considered unnecessary and against the morals of our society. Such famous quotes of his are used throughout Australia to symbolise determination and strength. Ned Kelly died for what he believed in and if that doesn’t show courage I don’t know what does. In my opinion he is an ignorant selfless hero. “ I fear it as little as to drink out of a cup of tea. “If my lips teach the public that men are made mas by bad treatment and id the police taught that they may exasperate to madness men they persecute and ill treat, my life will not be entirely thrown away.” In the words of Ned before his brutal beating to death “such is life” …. His Legacy to live on until the end of human…
