In this novel by Kiera Cass, not even a corrupted society can stop a girl's ambitious dream to make her own decisions. America Singer is a sixteen-year-old girl who was trying to figure out where she stood in life. She lives in a modern caste system. There is a total of eight castes and her family falls in the fifth division. The fifth caste is made up of musicians and other entertainers. She is reminded daily of her social status and how she has no say in her future, but then an opportunity is revealed. All she has to do is take it.
America lives in a futuristic community called Carolina. Carolina is roughly the southeast part of the Current United States of America. The treehouse behind America’s house is where America and Aspen have their secret meetings before America is sent to the Palace for the Selection. The story is set after a third world war. The characters include Prince Maxon, Aspen, Marlee, Celeste and the king. The protagonists are America and Prince Maxon. The antagonist is Maxon's father the king. The story begins in Carolina but the remainder of the story takes place in the palace. America spends most of her stay at the palace in the garden. The women’s room is a place in the palace where the contestants in the Selection spend a lot of their time preparing …show more content…
for the events with the Prince. America along with the other girls spend their time in this room getting to know each other.
America Singer finds herself in a tough situation when she is faced with choosing her soulmate.
35 girls from different castes were entered into "The Selection" and America was one of them. Only one of them can win Prince Maxon. The selection is a competition to find a wife for the prince who is of age to become married. America enters to help her family's financial need but is hesitant to leave her boyfriend Aspen. Among the many problems in this novel America faces the challenge of letting herself move on from her previous boyfriend, Aspen so she can love the prince. She is torn and doesn't know how to make this decision. Either way, she will lose a valuable person in her
life.
The Selection has many valuable morals for teenage girls. America follows her heart and chooses for herself, not for society. She learns to embrace new opportunities and to stand up for herself. This book suggests that it is fine to not have a plan and live day by day. The reader learns to never quit and always finish what you start no matter how difficult it becomes. The theme shows the reader that situations are what you make of them. America steps out of her comfort zone and this allows her to appreciate the life she has. She is in control of her fate.
In this novel, a cruel society cannot stop America’s wish to have freedom. I recommend this book to teenagers who are trying to figure out their identity. Teenagers will be able to relate how America has no idea what the right thing to do is. In the story, America was taught to be one thing and wanted to be another. She chose what was best for her. Sometimes you have to make your own decisions even if it's not what others urge you to do. America Singer is a great role model for girls everywhere. She displays kindness, honesty, and hard work. These are all skills that should be taught in today’s society.
