The Cay is about a blind boy, an older black man, and a cat stranded on a deserted cay during World War II. The story tells about a black man named Timothy, and a young boy named Phillip whose ship was torpedoed by a German U-boat. After surviving on a raft, Phillip and Timothy drift ashore on an island in the Devil’s Mouth, somewhere in the Caribbean Sea. Soon after Phillip went blind, Timothy shouted, ”We found dee (the) island!” So then, they went to the island, thinking about ways they could survive. After a while, Phillip got frustrated because life on the island was too difficult.
