African Americans played in the Civil War. In 1792 a law was made to exclude African
from serving in the war. On July 17, 1862 congress passed the confiscation act allowing all
slaves of rebel masters free as soon as they came into union lines . Congress also repealed the
1792 law. Because this law was no longer in action hundreds even thousands of African

in this war the gained a lot of respect , showed their courage , and their love for the U.S. It was
a huge honor for William Carney to be the first African American to receive a medal of honor.
