The term “broaden your mind” can be defined as expanding intellectual capacity and providing a broader perspective on life. The aim of this essay is to discuss the concept that universities broaden the mind, which can be argued from many different perspectives. Firstly the issue of a university having purpose must be discussed, the definition of a university is ‘the establishment where a seat of higher learning is housed.’ (According to Google definition)
University education is voluntary; students are not spoon fed information. Students are expected to do back ground reading and a lot of independent research, during which they attend lectures and seminars to help guide them. University is about independent learning which maybe gateway to expanding self knowledge , and understanding thus improving a objective view of a topic which in this case is a way expanding the mind. Though it can be argued that broadening knowledge is based on the fundamental approach to the topic at hand, if you do not have a passion for learning you would not learn. As Thomas Friendman thought “"the enduring skill" needed in a flat world is "an ability to learn how to learn," so that we can readily adapt to rapid changes. He advocates that By loving to learn” (Thomas Friendman, Findarticles paragraph 6). Friedman is saying that, for the economy to adjust to the revolving changes in the world, students being taught topics should not be spoon fed but should discover ideas on their own, this way they can think more on their toes.
There are many ways of broadening the mind it is not essential to go to a university as there are many other factors that may help, such as the environment.
