Presently, the country has more than 36,000 waste generating industries, producing approximately 6 million tonnes of wastes per annum. Around 50 per cent of this can be recycled, which is not being done. As per the Frost & Sullivan Report 2013 - “Analysis of Indian Water and Wastewater Treatment Equipment Market” finds that the market earned revenues of over INR 63.07 billion in 2011 and estimates this to reach INR 102.34 billion in 2016. However, despite requirements for pollution control measures, industrial & hazardous wastes are generally dumped on land or discharged into water bodies without adequate treatment.
