Objectivity (Actual Title Pending)
To be objective means to be fair and look at the facts by showing nonpartisanship. Many journalists sometimes forget this and their biases come out in their writing. This is exactly what Brooke Gladstone tackles in the comic Objectivity, which discusses how media sometimes doesn’t report all the facts at hand but instead includes personal opinions and bias and more importantly how big of an impact media has on society. The first paragraph talks about Lippmann and his views of objectivity, it is also the paragraph that the author defines Objectivity. I think the block of text in the comic is meant to go more in depth about the topic she is talking about. For example on page 78, one page before the paragraph format, the author refers to Lippmann as “one of journalism’s greatest theorists” and later begins to talk about him more in the paragraph format style. I think she is using the paragraph formatting to indicate to the reader that “this part” is important. Another reason that I believe she might be using the paragraph formatting is to give the reader information that would make less sense in comic strip format. For example when she is saying “the “yellow” that had dominated much of mainstream journalism gives way to mottled gray”, she would have a hard time making a comic panel for this because she only uses the colors;black, blue and white. So my point is that sometimes it’s easier to get the message across by using words instead of
