Sonny's Blues" is a short story set in the ghetto of Harlem, NY. James Baldwin wrote "Sonny's Blues" to articulate how the African-American culture enabled countless numbers of Blacks to escape, survive, endure and overcome various types of institutionalized racism and accompanying forms of social, economical and political oppression. African-American culture refers to a particular society at a particular time and place, which expresses and shares a set of learned beliefs, values, tradition, history, arts, religion, food and music. The different forms of the African-American culture gave blacks a sense of belonging.…

James Baldwin’s authorial attitude in “Sonny’s Blues” represents his view that in order to escape the metaphorical darkness and reach the light, Sonny must strike a balance between his personal lightness and darkness. Baldwin has a very unique style of writing. He incorporates many techniques into his story. He uses flashbacks as the story goes along. John would always go back it time and remember certain things. Whether they were good ir bad memories, they contributed to the story and helped John in the end. Also, the way Baldwin wrote the book seemed to me as if he had experienced some of the situations that were involved in the book. It made me think if this story was about some parts of his life. Maybe the book was an informational book about his life growing up and how the things that happened to him made his life the way it is…

Short stories are entertaining tales, not very high in details, about an assortment of people, places, events, etc. While reading the short stories, I found that the main characters, the narrator of “Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin, Leroy in “Shiloh” by Bobbie Ann Mason and Julia in “Country Husband” by John Cheever, all experienced their worlds through different scenarios that caused isolation throughout their story. Isolation consists of a character, or person, taking themselves into their own world and how they want to see it. Personally, I isolate myself from having fun with friends to go into my room, with complete silence, to do my homework in a relaxing environment. Sonny experiences his life with immature control over his brother, Leroy…

I find there are two major themes that Baldwin is trying to convey, suffering and irony. The first theme that he brings out and tries to get the reader to understand is the theme of suffering. The second theme that the author illustrates is the theme of irony. James Baldwin writes about two African-American brothers growing up in Harlem, a black ghetto in New York, during the 1950's. During this time black people were forced to live in a world of discrimination, poverty and suppression.…

Baldwin is conscious of his impotence in not being able to help his ill father or in dealing with systemic racism. The bitterness that consumed the older Baldwin, because of paranoia, also consumed Baldwin in the face of segregation. As Baldwin recalls his youth, he mentions his father being mentally and physically abusive because of his illness. Later, when Baldwin acts violently at the restaurant, he fears that his bitterness has made him violent too. While the men’s problems are different, Baldwin connects his father’s internal conflicts with his own external struggles. What I take away from this essay is a son trying to make amends with his father. Once Baldwin encounters racism in New Jersey, he forgives his father because he understands…

Baldwin writes “We had got on, partly because we shared, in our different fashions, the vice of stubborn pride”, establishing a feeling of attunement between father and son. A theme which is prevalent throughout the essay. The son describes his father with an eloquent level of acceptance. He asserts his predilection to be contemptuous of [his] father for the conditions of his life, for the condition of [their lives]”. However, Baldwin goes on to explain that while his father was the “most bitter man he had…

The story begins with a nineteen-year-old James Baldwin at his father’s funeral. Looking back on the time he spent with his father, Baldwin realizes that he very rarely spoke to his father and had almost no relationship with him. Baldwin credits this partially to the fact that both him and his father were stubborn and prideful, but also maintains his father “could be chilling in the pulpit and indescribably cruel in his personal life and he was certainly the most bitter man I have ever met; yet it must be said that there was something else to him, buried in him, which lent him his tremendous power and, even, a rather crushing charm” (Baldwin 588). This bitterness is a natural reaction to the racial tensions during Baldwin’s father’s life.…

Baldwin recounts his experiences in life as a poor black child. He connects the socially depriving factors of the ghetto inflicted upon the people by themselves as well as those put on by their oppressors. He appeals to the audience’s sense of logos through his explanation of how many blacks thought they deserved the treatment they received. Baldwin lists many of the racial stereotypes used against the blacks in the ghetto, appealing to the audience’s sense of pathos. Finally, his previous works of literature and his…

Sonny’s Blues by James Baldwin is a short story written in 1957. It is a story about Sonny, and his relationship to music, his brother, the narrator and the society he is living in. This story takes place in Harlem, New York, which is known to be a major African-Americans residential and cultural place. It is also known for its poverty and place where drugs are frequently used and present. The narrator is Sonny’s older brother. He seems to succeed in life by joining the army, getting married, having three children until the lost of his younger child, Gracie who died of polio. Sonny is the lost brother and son of Harlem. He only lives for one thing and only, to be a musician, and he wants to play his piano and play the jazz. When the narrator and Sonny are finally getting along it seems like it is already too late to save Sonny from the bad habits of using drug. Sonny is a drug addict to heroin. His suffering life controlled by the addiction of heroin is also the life that permits him to live his music to the fullest. This paradox emphasizes the relationship of art to life and art to suffering. James Baldwin illustrates this theme using the blues music, which is a type of folk music developed in the 19th century by African-Americans in the south, often addressing suffering loss.…
