Brownfields Investigation
Statement of Problem and Hypothesis
This investigation explores the effect on leaking underground storage tanks at the Getty Station (located at 1046 Boston Post Road) on contaminants located on and around Boston Post Road. In the experiment, the distance from the leaking storage tank will be compared to the amount of contaminant in that area, if any. It is predicted for this experiment that if there are leaking underground storage tanks below the Getty gasoline station, the nearby Boston Post Road and surrounding road will contain traces of the toxic substances present in gasoline because they will have permeated through the ground.
Experimental Design
1. Obtain permission from the Getty gasoline station and/or other appropriate organizations for testing for contaminates at 1046 Boston Post Road.
2. Designate ten spots for testing for contaminants; these spots should be located at five-foot intervals between the leaking underground storage tanks and Boston Post Road.
3. Procure the necessary materials: ten contaminate-testing kits, proper digging materials, safety materials (i.e. gloves and safety goggles), and other supplies that need to be used to ensure accurate results.
4. Put on any acquired safety attire. Use standard protocol to dig into the ground (when necessary) through the grassy area and place the tests at the ten designated testing spots.
5. Let the tests remain in their designated areas for the appropriate amount of time; ensure that the tests are not disturbed by cars, human activity, etc.
6. Once this time has elapsed, remove the tests and check the level of the various contaminants. Execute caution with this step because gasoline is extremely volatile.
7. If there is any level of contaminants, convey information to the Getty gasoline station and suggest immediate action.
