Bruce Tuckman's Stages Of Group Development
Bruce Tuckman’s theory to aiding group development was introduced in 1965 and consisted of five stages, it was known as the Tuckman Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing model. The fifth stage was introduced at a later date and was adjourning. The first stage was forming, at this point the team or group would decide on a team leader who would decide and give instruction to fellow team members. The team leader will be interviewed by other colleagues to derive information based on the project, and personal team targets and aims. Tuckman’s second stage storming, is based on making informed decisions upon team judgements and also expressing (brainstorming) potential ideas to put forward for agreement from the team leader. The third stage of Tuckman’s model was norming, this is the agreement stage. Tuckman’s beliefs for this stage was that roles and responsibilities should have been clearly agreed and in action by this point. Decision making should be strictly set out in the way that any big decisions should be finalised within the group, and for any smaller less significant agreements should be left with responsible individuals with experience or a scaled down team within the group. Tuckman saw this stage as the opportunity for any team member to truly participate with one another, and engaging in any work-related activities that may be carried out, additionally in any phase Tuckman believed the leader deserved the highest level of respect. Phase 4 was technically the last stage, at this stage Tuckman stated teams should be ‘strategically aware’ this is working as a team and also as the words state being aware of the work being carried out at the moment of time. The primary focus should be to over-achieve goals, decisions should also be made in correspondence with the team leader from this
