No one lived there, therefore it became very lonely. After Bruno discovered other human beings beyond the fence he decided it was worth exploring. He knew he was not to go near the fence, but being isolated from others drove him towards it. When he met Shmuel he felt cured of his boredom and loneliness. His time spent trapped in his own thoughts was over because he could now share them with Shmuel. Unlike most friendships their age, they shared their thoughts and how they feel about situations occurring around them. In this group they were required to tell authorities if family or neighbors opposed Hitler’s beliefs and actions. A theory of why Gretel did not join the League is that she might have told authorities of her Grandmother’s opposing beliefs, while she was alive. If she told authorities before Father did, he would be severely punished and lose his position in Hitler’s army. Also Father’s mother would be executed.
