“When we first started it was for a better cardio workout and to stay healthy. I had no idea on how to play racquet ball but Tom knew. Starting out we played by the rules. But as the weeks went by so did the rules. We would kick, push trip etcetera.” Kevin explained. At Edgewater Park racquetball and fitness it was in the summer of 1986 Kevin and his best friend Tomas White wanted to stay in shape in a exciting way instead of using boring treadmills. So they solved this problem by taking up racquetball. Thinks hard to remember the time Kevin says “At the time I was a Junior in highschool and Tom was a Senior so I was about 16 and he was 17 years olds.”…
Many years ago, African-Americans no matter how talented or athletic were prohibited in playing or joining in most sports events because of racial barriers. In the year 1927 in Silver, South Carolina, someone who would change that was born. Her name was Althea Gibson. "She was the first African American to play professional tennis or professional golf in the United States -- and she played them both!" As a little girl Gibson enjoyed participating in many sports and playing them on her free time. In the summer of 1941, she competed in a paddle ball tournament, which she won. She was suggested to try out tennis and that is exactly what she did. She enjoyed it so much she began taking tennis lessons and competing in tennis tournaments.…

She started playing tennis when she was in 3rd grade, and has been an enthusiastic player ever since. She was able to do the unthinkable and made the Varsity team her Freshman year, and even got 1st in Regionals. While she is a very important player and pretty impressive at the sport, she doesn’t plan on continuing her tennis career after high school. She said in our interview, “I don’t really think I’ll continue playing tennis. I plan on going to a college in California and probably studying Criminal Justice or something like that.”…
My mother started playing it at 13 because she has bronchitis and could no longer swim at the level that she hoped too. So, she dedicated herself to playing tennis and eventually became top 200 in the world. My father on the other hand started playing at around the same age but he never became as good as her. In fact, when they met is when my father improved drastically because he had my mother as a coach. After he started to win is when he became a major tennis fanatic and when I say major, I mean wake everyone up at 2 in the morning to watch tennis matches. So when my parents got married and had their first kid and then three years later, they had me. Naturally, they tried to get my brother to start playing tennis at a very young age but he just wasn't feeling it and as much as it hurt my dad, they just kept putting him into different sports. But then he turned 7 and my father took him with this lady that was teaching at the courts he was playing at and that was the start of my brothers career. Since my big brother started playing then its just normal that I did too. At age four I picked up my racquet and little did I know how much that racquet would change my life. I don't really remember much of my early tennis days so I'm going to fast forward three years. By the time I was seven I was ready to start playing tennis tournaments but my coach, Ms. Janan, wouldn't let me until I got…
The origins of tennis are mysterious and unknown. Although some historians have claimed that tennis was developed as far back as Ancient Egypt. However, the first recorded ball and racquet game was first played by monks located somewhere in southern France around the beginning of the twelfth century. They usually played with their hands and hit the ball against a wall. However, the monks soon developed crude instruments with which to strike the ball. They also developed the first type of playing court, which was usually the monastery courtyard. It is there where they devised a crude net with a rope to divide the playing areas. Over the next few centuries, the game spread to several countries in Europe, and it developed several variations. By the start of the nineteenth century, the game became popular and competitive in Great Britain and quickly developed into today's modern tennis, which now consists of many organizations with numerous levels of competition for all ages and skill.…
When I first came to Lake Highland I tried out for the girl’s golf team, but I was not experienced or skilled enough to make it on. This was a devastating moment for me, but I realized that I needed to try harder and work harder to make it on the team the next year. I became much more skilled and was able to make the team with ease. What the failure told me was that if I got knocked down then I would have to work hard to get back up. This lesson was very crucial to me my junior year of high school. During the golf season I severely injured my wrist. This injury put me out of the game for six months. I gained arthritis in my wrist, but I remembered what happened to me in seventh grade and worked hard to regain my skills. I made the team the…

I have been playing tennis leisurely for about ten years. Once every couple of weeks throughout the warmer months (May-September), I often go to a local tennis court to play with either my father or some friends. Over the past few years, my friends and I have noticed myself improving and winning more games. As a result, I have decided to enter myself in some tournaments this spring and start to play competitively. Though some people play tennis to remain fit, I believe the correct way to approach training is that it’s important to be fit in order to play good tennis. The following is a 6-week training guide that I will use in order to become fit to play competitively:…
When my last tennis match ended it was bitter sweet. Knowing I might not see all the great people I’ve met and the friends I've made over the last six years much anymore is hard. But knowing that I got to apart of such a great team was something I’ll never take for granted. Something to look forward to of course is the future. It’s coming fast with college applications being sent out and then finding out of you got into the college of your choice. Being in tennis and on the speech team have helped shape who I am. Taking me from being a very shy person to decently less shy. I’m not afraid of stating my opinion as much as I was. In my next step to higher education, college, the will help my mack friends and set in apart in the classroom, asking…

When it comes to professional tennis, The Championships, Wimbledon is the oldest running and most prestigious championship in the world which dates back to its founding in 1877, a span of over 138 years. “Perhaps that’s another part of Wimbledon’s prestige. In a world that seems to be more and more complicated, Wimbledon keeps it simple: Be respectful and play with honor… (Rudnansky)”. Located at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London, England, the women’s tournament is comprised of 128 tennis players from all across the world. These athletes play in matches over two weeks during the end of June and beginning of July, eventually leading to a championship game played at Wimbledon’s Centre Court, the largest court at the most prestigious tennis venue in the world. Wimbledon has been witness to some of the greatest moments in tennis history, for both men and women, and each year that it is played, history is being written over again and those who participate, both winners and losers, they will go down in tennis history forever.…
I picked up the game about two years ago. The children had started training in the Junior Development Program at the Club. One weekend, we decided to hit a few balls with the children on the condominium's courts. It didn't turn out to be a very fulfilling experience for me. I was either missing the balls or sending the balls flying all over, often out-of-court. I resolved to make that the last time I was going to be seen "playing tennis" that way! It was neither good role modelling nor good motivation for the…

I trained for about 6 months before the coach put me up in my first tournament. The tournament was going to be a local tournament. I trained long and hard every day not knowing what to expect. I have had a few formal matches before but never had gone full blast against a proper team. The day came and I was as prepared as I could have been.…
