Racism has been a problem in society since the beginning of civilization. Race is something that all people should take pride in. Race represents culture, family, and heritage, all things that should be proudly flaunted. Racism is so complex it can be defined in hundreds of different ways. I think of racism as a negative belief or attitude towards a different race that leads to brutality, prejudice, and profiling.

Racial profiling began with the conquest of native people during colonization of the new world, India, and West Africa (“Racial Profiling”, 2016). People were taking advantage of different races and calling it “civilization”. Marlow witnessed this first hand when he realized the truth behind what was going on in the Congo. “The conquest of earth, which mostly means taking it away from those who have a different complexion or slightly flatter noses than ourselves is not a pretty thing when you look into it” (Conrad, 1990). He is witnessing racial profiling at its finest because the Europeans take one look at someone with darker skin and immediately think less of them and think they can be taken advantage of. This is something that wasn’t okay then, and never should be acceptable in modern culture.
Conclusion
Even though people think racism is one attitude in and of itself, it can manifest in many different ways. A racist attitude can lead to brutality, prejudices, and profiling. Racism is something that never should have, and never should be tolerated. Pride in one's heritage is a basic human right that everyone deserves. Racial equality is something that today's society needs to be striving for. To accomplish this, humanity needs to more have mutual respect and empathy for each other.
