1. Does BSB, Inc., enjoy any competitive advantages or core competencies?
a. BSB enjoys both competitive advantage and core competencies. Their first competitive advantage is their experience. With their 10 years of service inside the university, they have all the knowledge with regards to their customer’s preferences and needs. Survey results also give them competitive advantage over their competitor. In terms of core competencies, I think they have a manager that is data driven. Renee based her action on what the data shows. She find ways how to transfer this data into information and then into action.
2. Initially, how did Renee Kershaw choose to use her pizza operations to compete with off-campus eateries?
a. First, she assessed what are the current available resources and what are the needs of the customers. With the available time, staff and facility (grill), she decided to put-up pizza operations since it does not require much time to set-up and it does require little training for the staff. After knowing the needs of their primary market, she provide them with new option in terms of food and services. To compete with off-campus eateries she introduced the delivery service inside the university. With these, she provide the students the comfort of having their meal inside their dormitory without worrying that there will be no more food because of their tight schedule. Adding pizza on their menu provide students with more options.
What were her competitive priorities?
a. Her competitive priorities were cost and customer satisfaction. Since pizza operations requires minimal staff training and facility, she keeps the operating cost low. Offering limited toppings combinations also helps in keeping the operation cost low. Introducing delivery service improves customer satisfaction while adding no operating cost since they only uses bicycle as a means of delivery.
