Unfortunately, the United States economy was very unstable; therefore, the stock market crashed in October of 1929. Many people were investing their income and savings into speculative ventures and even borrowing money from brokers and banks in order to pay for the stock in cash. The stock market crash caused financial turmoil which resulted in many businesses closing and countless layoffs. With so many people unemployed or underemployed, businesses continued to fail and unemployment was at an all-time high. Also, the dust bowl was going on at about the same time, therefore farmers were hurting as well and crops were not flourishing. By 1932,…

In the short story "The Bet" by Anton Chekhov a wager is made that changes the lives of two people. The story begins with a heated argument at a party over which is more moral, capital punishment or life imprisonment. The host of the party, the banker (appositive), believes that capital punishment is more moral because the death sentence kills the victim quicker rather than dragging out the process. A twenty-five year old lawyer at the party responds, saying, he would choose the life sentence to be more moral because any life is better than no life at all. Hearing this response (gerund) causes the banker to bet the lawyer two million dollars that the lawyer can not last five years in solitary confinement. The lawyer accepts the wager, but pushes it to fifteen years in hopes of making a point (prepositional). The terms of the wager are that the lawyer is to live in solitary confinement without any human interaction for fifteen years, but is granted any books, music, wine, etc. that he wants (noun clause). As the fifteen years pass, the lawyer discovers the significance of human life. Anton Chekhov's "The Bet" emphasizes the idea that the life of a human is far more valuable than money.…

The medium capitalized segment of the stock market is being increasingly perceived as an attractive investment segment with high growth potential. The primary objective of the CNX Midcap Index is to capture the movement and be a benchmark of the midcap segment of the market.  Methodology: The CNX Midcap Index is computed using free float market capitalization method with base date of Jan 01, 2003 and base value of 1000, wherein the level of the index reflects the total free float market value of all the stocks in the index relative to particular base market capitalization value. The method also takes into account constituent changes in the index and importantly corporate actions such as stock splits, right issue, new issue of shares etc. without affecting the index value.  Market Representation: The CNX Midcap Index represents about 11.08% of the free float market capitalization of the stocks listed on NSE as on September 28, 2012. The traded value of all CNX Midcap Index constituents for the last six months ending September 2012 is approximately 17.14% of the traded value of all stocks.  Selection Criteria: The criteria for the CNX Midcap Index include the following: 1. All the stocks, which constitute more than 5% market capitalization of the universe of the stocks traded on NSE (after sorting the securities in descending order of market capitalization), shall be excluded in order to reduce the skewness in the weightages of the stocks in the universe. After step (1), the weightages of the remaining stocks in the universe is determined again. After step (2), the cumulative weightage is calculated. After step (3), companies which form part of the cumulative percentage in ascending order up to first 75% (i.e. 74.99%) of the revised universe shall be ignored. After step (4) all constituents of S&P CNX Nifty shall be ignored. From the universe of companies remaining after step (5) i.e. 75 % and above, first 100 companies in terms of highest market capitalization,…

INTERNATIONAL EQUITY MARKETS Firms are financed with both debt and equity. Although the debt markets have been the center of activity in the international financial markets over the past three decades, there are signs that international equity capital is becoming more popular. Transaction of a foreign borrower in a domestic market in local currency is the predominant international equity activity. Foreign firms often issue new shares in foreign markets and list their stock on major stock exchanges, such as those in New York, Tokyo, or London. The purpose of foreign issues and listings is to expand the investor base in the hope of gaining access to capital markets in which the demand for shares of equity ownership is strong. A foreign firm that wants to list its shares on an exchange in the United States does so through American Depository Receipts (ADRs). These are the receipts to bank accounts that hold shares of the foreign firm’s stock in that firm’s country. The equities are actually in a foreign currency, so by holding them in a bank account and listing the receipt on the account on the American exchanges, the shares can be revalued in dollars and redivided so that the price per share is more typical of that of the U.S. equity markets ($20 to $60 per share frequently being the desired range). There was considerable growth in the 1990s in the euro-equity markets. A euro-equity issue is the simultaneous sale of a firm’s shares in several different countries, with or without listing the shares on an exchange in that country. The sales take place through investment banks. Once issued, most euro equities are listed at least on the Stock Exchange Automated Quotation System (SEAQ), the computer-screen quoting system of the International Stock Exchange (ISE) in London.…
