Semantics – This Popchips Company is using semantics to advertise their healthier choice of chips. This is only a clever ad if the reader is familiar with the phrase “spare me the guilt trip”, and they changed it to state, “spare me the guilt chip” in order to explain their chips are healthy, and you do not need to feel guilty after eating them. Originally the phrase, “spare me the guilt trip” is based on the idea that if someone does something they know they should not be doing, such as eating chips, that someone (or their self) will continually nag them about doing what they should not be doing. However, the Popchips company changed the “tr” to “ch” in order to change the meaning all-together. This is also an example of phonology, in which…

Microcephaly is a rare disease that is noticeable immediately at birth, and in some cases it is noticeable before birth. Microcephaly also is a rare, neurological disorder in which the circumference of a child’s head is smaller than other children for the age and gender of the infant or child. With microcephaly, the brain is not able to develop properly, or in some cases does not grow at all, this all happens when the baby is in the womb. Microcephaly also makes the head smaller than it normally is. This disease is so rare that it only affects one in every 666,666 in the United States. Those who have microcephaly are usually mentally retarded and will have problems with hyperactivity, dwarfism, seizures, balance, speech and motor problems, as well as others. The child’s head can not be treated to become a normal shape or size but the treatments focus on ways to decrease the impact of the deformities and neurological disabilities. Microcephaly can happen to a child from either a genetic disorder or by the mother abusing certain substances. These substances include drugs, alcohol, or exposure to radiation. Microcephaly can be diagnosed by head circumference, x-ray, computed tomography scan, also called a CT or a CAT scan, magnetic resonance imaging, MRI, blood tests, or urine tests. The over all amount of the problem is usually not totally understood immediately after birth, but most likely revealed as the child grows and becomes an adult. Over all microcephaly is a disease that affects a child for the rest of his/her life.…

In this experiment we investigate the properties of SLIME. Substitution of polyvinyl alcohol instead of Guar gum makes this experiment quite accessible. The Slime is prepared by mixing a solution of (Na2B4O7*10H2O) sodium tetraborate decahydrate (Borax) and H2O with a solution of polyvinyl alcohol (pva) and H2O. Then stirring for ~10 minutes to obtain the final product, SLIME. The product was examined and noted on the “non-Newtonian fluid” properties.…
