Topic: The Buddhism
General Purpose: To inform
Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about some main beliefs of one of the most popular religions, the Buddhism.
Thesis: From Buddhism to any individual, the Buddhism and Buddhist beliefs become one of the most influential religions in the world. i. Introduction A. Attention Getter: “God said, let there be light: and there was light.” For Christians, Jesus is their only God. However, as the founder of another famous religion, the Buddha was not a God and never claimed to be. He said everyone can become a Buddha and he was just here to show people the path to get Nirvana, which means heaven. Christianity is so popular in the U.S, almost everyone knows Jesus well. How about the Buddhism? B. Reason to Listen: As a religion with the longest history and top five popularity in the world. It is important to know the history and basic beliefs of it. C. Credibility Statement: My father is a huge fan of Buddhism and always tells me stories about it. D. Preview of Main Points: First, I will discuss the origin of Buddhism. Second, I will discuss the basic beliefs of Buddhism. Finally, I will discuss the connection between Buddhism and individual.
ii. First, let’s talk about the origin. 1. Siddhartha Gautama was a spiritual teacher from the Indian subcontinent, on whose teachings Buddhism was founded. a. According to Barbara O'Brien, in her article “The Life of the Buddha”: Siddhartha was once a prince. During a trip, he saw the young and the old, the illness and death. b. He realized that wealth and luxury did not guarantee happiness, so he explored the different teachings religions and philosophies of the day, to find the key to human happiness. c. After six years of study and deep meditation he was finally enlightened at the age of thirty five.
3. He died when he was eighty years old, after that, his excellent disciples continually spread the Buddhism.
